| I never saw him play in P&B but I do remember him playing for Wigan and Leigh. He was a outstanding goalkicker of the old school and first class centre/ loose forward. RIP Laurie.

| One of the greatest...I remember the try he scored for the Pies at Wembley....He gathered the ball around halfway and broke the defence having the Hunslet fullback to beat. He weighed him up, turned on the afterburners and accelerated around him for one of the finest Wembley tries. A memory from closer to home came in the 1980's. I had occasion to collect a pallet of beer from Greenalls. Having no idea where to go I asked a familiar figure in a white coat. It was none other than Gilly. I explained my problem and he put his left arm around my shoulder and gesticulated where I should go. I looked him in the eyes and told him he was one of my heroes in his Wire days....I felt like a giggly schoolgirl chancing upon one of the Bay City Rollers....I don't know who was more embarrassed, me or him.

| I was at Wembley when he scored that try from inside his own half and he also kicked a goal from the halfway line. How they gave the Lance Todd to Ray Ashby is as big a mystery to me as some of Billy Thomson's decisions
He used to stand on Winwick Street every morning waiting for a lift when I was going to Central Station and he always had a cheerful smile and time for a chat.
He was a superb natural athlete who all the young kids idolised but, more than that, in spite of his talents and in a game liberally sprinkled with nutcases he was a modest, genial gentleman. Rest in Peace

Sorry to hear about Laurie Gilfedder and echoing RD's comment thanks for sharing memories.
Didn't the Lance Todd get shared in that Final? I'm not saying that you are saying otherwise btw but I've met Ray Ashby a couple of times recently after Wire/Wigan games and he's a decent chap to share thoughts on the game just witnessed and back in the day, a good egg.

| I think he shared the Lance Todd with Brian Gabbitas the Hunslet Half Back.
Nothing against Ray Ashby or Gabbitas. I just thought Gilfedder should have got it.
The three things I remember from that final was the goal from the halfway line when Hunslet kicked out on the full because such goal kicks were more of a rarity then . Brian McTigue's pass to Gilfedder to put him in the clear and Gilfedder's searing run to score the try.
I have the same opinion of much of the game's journalists as I have of the administrators over the years which is not a very high opinion but, at the end of the day, the speccies opinion does not count.

More impressive was the kicks were straight off the pitch, not sand or even a tee which technically makes the goal kick an easy volley.

Laurie was a friend of my dad also and my dad was the Best Man at Clarrie and Irene's wedding.
I remember being at Clarrie's wedding reception in the leisure centre at Wilderspool sitting with the famous Pontypool front row. We showed them around the centre, as it was quite advanced at the time.
