| Respect to Chrissyg for a very entertaining thread on our worst ever signings. This is its positive flip side, if you like.
Who have been our most unexpectedly good signings?
It's not about the likes of Jonathan Davies or Alfie Langer, where we thought at the time 'wow, what an amazing signing' and they actually proved to be every bit as good as we'd hoped.
No, this is about those players who arrived with little fanfare but went on to surpass all expectations and become fans' favourites.
Of course, you can't beat Brian Bevan, who came as an unknown and left, 740 tries later, as the greatest player in our history.
But who else makes the list?
I'll start the ball rolling with Bob Jackson. Not much was known about Jacko when he came to Warrington, but after becoming a cornerstone of the 1986 team that was, until last season, the most exciting Wire side I'd ever seen, and then continuing to give wholehearted service in the years that he was with us, he definitely left as a hero.

| Chris hicks, he was the unheralded signing after king, Monas and Anderson, not many people had heard of him. The rest, is really good history. Apart from that bit when xe had him playing fullback in 08

| I remember the murmour on the terraces when we signed Des Drummond from Leigh that he was too old/past it and we didnt need another winger. Within 20 minutes hed scored a length of the field try and the rest was history as they say - Not so much a surprise signing as he was already a GB player but more that he won everyone over

| Kelly Shelford. Arrived with a dubious reputation and managed to sign a contract with Bradford as well as us. Turned out to be a great player for the five or six years he was with us and was hugely missed when he retired.

| I think maybe this thread will come up again in a few years & we will be talking about many of our current crop of youngsters , but for now 2 names spring to mind ... Lee Briers ,moved on by his hometown club & one my earlier heroes Brian Brady.

You would never catch me with one of those childish signatures: |
|
| Brent Grose came over and was virtually unknown......scored 2 or 3 tries on debut at Huddersfield and never looked back. Also scored a couple of try of the season contenders, the Widnes away and Wakey at home spring to mind.

| I've got to agrre with The Punisher - Brent Grose.
Darren Burns also makes the list, but maybe that's just because I didn't follow the NRL at the time.

| Richie Mathers! was definitely a fan favourite that was emphasised by the treatment he received by the wire fans at Magic Weekend. Also he should have been Lance Todd in the Challenge cup final against Leeds.

| I remember thinking after the Magic weekend the other week, ' just how good was Matty Blythe'. I think his progress has been marked this year and far from being an fill in player covering for injuries, he is blossoming into an extremely valuable member of the team

| David Solomona. I was not expecting a lot from him, I thought he was past it and wouldn't be great for us. But he helped us a lot last year IMO.

| The one that springs to mind for he has to be Nigel Vagana, classy centre who came here at a young age, Talking of Kiwi's, Duanne Mann and Gary Mercer were classic signings for the wire too... but since they were both NZ internationals at the time it does not count!!!

| Derek Finnegan. Cost next to nothing from Moore RUFC. Tough as teak and as honest, committed and reliable a professional that you could wish for.
