Never thought I would say this after their excessive trophy hoarding in the 80s and 90s but its good to see the Wigan fans to get some silverware again after some dark times. I know there are a couple of internet idiots who post on here but I'm talking about most of the pie eaters

After Farrell left they had a bit of a nightmare, remember their first season under Millward when they got beat 75-0 at Saints and 70-0 at Leeds, then after getting that disaster season out of the way they had an even worse one where they were stuck at the bottom of the league and nearly relegated. Usually in any sport, when you have a once-great club fallen on hard times, their fans desert them, but Wigan improved their gates during these times, they had lost some disillusioned fans when they left Central Park and went to the JJB but it seemed like the tough times brought some Wiganers back to watching RL. I know we always made jokes about the Wigan walk but they stuck by them well through some dross which must have been heartbreaking for fans brought up on Hanley, Edwards and Bell.

Brian Noble, despite getting criticised every year, managed to get Wigan to final eliminators or Cup semi finals, in a transition era when he was trying to move out Maurice Lindsay's legacy of having paid over the odds for NRL players who were past their best, and bringing in young players from the Academy. Now Mick McGuire has come in and proved in one season he is a top drawer coach.

You have to take your hat off to them, they have been the best team all season, if we're honest nobody would have reckoned this time last year that the pies would win at Old Trafford.

With so many good young players the future looks bright now for Wigan, I doubt they will repeat the dominance of the 80s and 90s because the salary cap will start to bite on them when some of the younger players renegotiate their contracts as top players, and they will inevitably lose players down the line, but they can certainly be as successful as Leeds have been in the last six years.

Congratualtions to Wigan. They deserved to win it.

With us not winning it at least it was a different side to the past three years. Looking forward to next season and Warrington, Wigan, Saints, Leeds having a good scrap at the top of the table. Im sure you can also add another couple of teams who could potentially make an impact on that list.

Thanks for this post! I agree, never in a month of sundays did I expect what has happened at Wigan this season! I was looking forward to better performances on the pitch, and fitter players, a top 4 placing would have been nice, anything more a bonus! This season has been amazing, and at times I thought we were overachieving! Yes the future is bright with some excellent youngsters coming through, but yourselves to have some cracking young players, Harrison (have him in Wigan colours tomorrow), Riley, and you have some excellent senior players, and Hodgeson will be a revelation at Wire!! Looking forward to some classic encounters with you in the coming seasons.......the mouths watering already!!!! not long til Feb!!!!

Matt

We broke the "spirit" of the cap by adjusting players wages which is an accepted practice in the NRL and other leagues with a salary cap so no we didn't cheat.
