| No Kev Penny for the York game.
Is he really that out of favour?
Any thoughts?

Yeah, i agree. It won't help him though moving back and forth between the 1st team and the reserves. He needs to develop his skills and strengthen his areas of weakness but this needs to happen in training and whilst playing in the 2nd team. Then start to expose him bit by bit from the bench with the full team, [ias part of the team[/i. Then stick to the plan even when he has a 'shocker' because it will happen.
Do this and I think we'll see KP flying down the wing again scoring match winning tries from inside our half of the field. We'd also be comfortable with his defence and we wouldn't worry when he fields a high ball or when he returns a kick chase.
Players like Kevin Penny are rare and given the right development he can have a massive future in the game.

That is the one. Richie Barnett was quick, but Penny has pace and knows how to use it.

| I guess at the minute too, it must be difficult for Smith to dedicate too much time to Kev, in that, there's loads & loads of other things that need fixing right now. Maybe, once the team has settled, he'll look to give Kev some 1-1 stuff, but right now, he's kind of not fundamental to what we're trying to do is he ?
If your making a trifle, I guess Smiths currently pressing down on the swiss roll so it's all even, and tight. Kev is probably the chocolate hundreds n' thousands.

That is a great post - what a description, it's made my day.
Can just imagine Smith saying 'Don't trifle with me, lad.

| He hasn't been too special in the reserves, problems with catching the high bomb and so on but he can only get better and with the help of lowes and smith, he should be a first team regular in 2010

| I think the important thing to remember is that the future of Kevin Penny is down to 1 person, and that's Kevin Penny...
Most people seem to agree that he has the raw materials to make a very good player, but at the moment there are a lot of flaws in his game that need sorting out.
What will be interesting is whether Penny has the attitude, patience, and most of all the intelligence to take on board what he needs to do to become that great player we all want him to be.... There must be a substantial dent in his pride at present, at the way his career has slid from Dream Team selection and contender for international honours, to basically the fall guy for the whole team's under acheivement.
If his attitude isn't correct he could easily think 'Balls to this' and proceed to sulk for the next 12 months, and allow his career to slip away, as many promising young players have done over the years.
Hopefully, there is somebody at the club, not neccessarily Tony Smith, putting an arm around his shoulder and generally keeping his spirits up....It would be a damn shame if Penny's career went down the pan simply because he got fed up, rather than him not actually being good enough.

| Penny was dropped after the Saints game, presumably because his defence isn't good enough. But seeing King easily bypassed by the York winger today makes me think that it is not just Penny who needs lessons in defence.

In fairness to Barnett, though, I haven't seen anything from Penny that I didn't from Barnett. I don't see where your arguement stands up tbh.

No.
Given open space, Barnett could do some damage and was handy with a kick chase (see Cas at home, 2006.)
Given open space, Penny can do some damage and is handy with a kick chase.
Neither are what you would determine as linebreakers, nor would you expect any to 'do' their opposite winger with footwork.

| i was at the quins game yesterday and as well as talking to quins and giants fans i was also talking to a couple of leeds fans too.
We got talking on Kevin Penny and the general consensus is that everyone seems to think he is the next offiah
If we didn't want him every other club would.
I think in a couple of years he will be a very dangerous player, he's not ready yet i agree but he will be eventually

You have been really loose with your summary there though.
Given space, Penny is in a different league to Barnett. They are poles apart.
You are right about them not being linebreakers, but that isn't what you are getting with these players.
Gaskell used to be a tough little player, decent tackler, made plenty of yards and broke loads of tackles (always our top player in this area), yet he couldn't score tries for toffee. I want a winger who can score from 90m, I'm not sure anyone in that team can at the moment.

Really ?
Check out what happens to Ade Gardener last year at the HJ. Also, check the try at KR in the Challenge Cup, not a straight run to the line. Then try and find footage of Wigan at home when he zoomed under the posts after making the fullback look daft, and his try again at KR in the Challenge Cup 2007.
I'd say his footwork & change of pace is exactly what sets him apart from the likes of Barnett. If he didn't have that, there wouldn't be anywhere near as much fuss about him.
