| I know there have been a few posts about smart phones, forgive me for posting another!
I have been an iPhone user for nearly 4 years, now I'm looking at going to the Galaxy 2. I have done my homework and believe the galaxy is far superior and faster than the iPhone, but has anybody on here gone from iPhone to Android, how do they compare, how does the android Market compare to the app store.
I think the beauty of the iPhone is it's simplicity.

| Ive gone the opposite way, from an HTC Desire to an iphone.
In my opinion the iphone OS is far quicker and slicker than an Android phone, the keypad on the iphone is superb and very responsive, the touch screen on the iphone seems to be quicker and smoother.
The biggest problem with Android is a lot of it is open source, the apps on the Android market don't get scrutinised and tested in the same way that they do with apple. Basically you could be downloading anything onto your Android phone at times, some will be fine but it only takes one dodgy download and your basically opening up your phone to anyone. With apple all the apps are checked and double checked again.

That depends on the handset. You certainly wouldn't notice it being far quicker and slicker than the likes of the Galaxy S II. The recent Android handsets are more powerful than the iphone and have better screens.

You mention this as a fault, when in fact it's a strength. You can do anything with an Android phone and you can do nothing with an Iphone, unless Apple want you to. The complete lack of homescreen functionality on the iphone is ridiculous, as it how locked down it is. It really is uncustomisable, when on Android you can have your phone how you want it. The Android market lets you know what permissions the app you are about to download requires. If you don't agree with them ,you don't download it. Sure there are a few iphone exclusive apps but 99% of the decent apps on the iphone will be ported given how many Android handsets there are.

| for the op, i bought the galaxy s2 a couple of weeks ago, love it, simple and easy to use and many have said it is probably the best phone on the market and is superioir to the iphone, (although you will find apple devouts won't have a bad word said against any of their products)

| i am an apple fan, i use a macpro qt work and a macbook pro.
i will have an ipad soon (when the 3 comes out) and probably a macbook air...
that said i went from iphone to android with a htc desire and i love it, it is as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. whereas the iphone is just too simple and constrained even when rooted.
it would take an O/S redesign to tempt me back, and i am looking forward to the new ice cream sandwhich phones for when i can renew in a few weeks.
They are significantly cheaper too, and have memory card slots and you can put new batteries in whenever you want !!
it's also nice not to be part of the in crowd...

| I have recently gone from the Iphone 3gs to the HTC Sensation and I think it was the best move I ever made. You can do much more with it because the OS is so much more open, all of the APS that you would want are available in the marketplace. 8mp Camera and Full HD video camera. The ability to be able to change the battery when it starts to struggle which they all do eventually and also expand the memory with a simple SD card are also winners.
I waited a long time to get an Iphone, Didnt wait anywhere near as long to get out of it again.

Your comparing last years tech to this years technology, i would have been suprised if the Android phones like the Galaxy SII hadn't improved past last years iphone. As you know with technology, what came out 6 - 12 months ago is old in technology terms especially with HTC who bring out 2 flagship models a year.
I'd expect the new iphone when it comes out to be far better than the Galaxy SII, it will pobably be the iphone 4GS or iphone5.
One thing i deffo aint is an apple fanboy, i couldn't stand them in the past as every tom dick and harry seemed to have one, i wanted to be different from the crowd which is why i originally bought the HTC Desire. I soon parted with that after a few months as you could hardly see the screen in daylight, ive got an iphone now only because i can see the screen clearly in all conditions plus its a very good phone and suits my needs.
Everyone is different and people prefer different things, i may get something different next year just for a change.

I had no idea about this app, thanks . It is available on my Galaxy S from the Android market so I assume it's fine on other devices.
In answer to the main question: I have never had an iPhone, I have used one a few times and from what I can see the functionality of the device is probably one of the best out there but in terms of hardware and the freedom to do to the device what you want; Android has it beat, hands down.
I have a custom ROM on my Galaxy S (didn't like the stock one). It makes the device much faster and it looks better. You can do all kinds of stuff with Android. For example: I run lots of console emulators on my phone (PSX, N64, GBA, SNES, NES, Genesis there is even a Nintendo DS one now), this means I can play all of the games exactly how they were on the original console. That is only the surface of the stuff you can do on Android. I know you can do this on iPhone too but, as I understand, it's a lot more difficult.
(A word of warning: one of the main reasons I got the Galaxy S was to be able to play FFVII on my phone. I recently flashed a new ROM with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and found that my emulators were not compatible with Android 2.3, so reverted back to 2.2 (Froyo). I know that most new devices are coming with Android 2.3 as standard now as it's the latest version of the OS. So, if you are interested in playing emulated games, you'll have to flash on a ROM with the 2.2 OS).
Check out: www.xda-developers.com. There are plenty of people on there who know how to do whatever you want with your device (be it Android or iPhone or even Symbian). It's not very 'luddite' friendly but enough reading will sort you out, it always has for me.
If you have any questions about customizing your Android I'll try to help as best I can .

50086_1357229109.jpg [b:33tg3xj5]Me:[/b:33tg3xj5] I'm still reeling from the news that someone is considering watching the 1st and 3rd game on Saturday and NOT watching Warrington play. It's like being in Shea Stadium when the Beatles came to town and deciding to nip out for a fag.
[b:33tg3xj5]knockersbumpMKII:[/b:33tg3xj5] Is it FOOK, you're good but you're not THAT good, jesus you wanky fans need to get over yourselves, Beatles at the Shea in '65 was a once in a lifetime opportunity for some (despite the following years performance), you can watch a very good team in primrose & yellow play every week if you really wanted to but comparing it to one of the very best music groups of all time in an iconic stadia such as the shea is overegging your importance, you're not even the best team in SL atm:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_50086.jpg |
