After the success of the elitist music thread. I thought I may open it up to reading.

It is that time of year for a Pimms and whatever in the sun with a nice summer read or Holiday page-turner or book that you think everyone should read and as I am going away in less than a fortnight; I thought I'd ask people's opinions.

What is everybody reading now?

What should everyone have read?

and what is your favourite book?

No criteria for reading. From Nigella's express to Tom Clancy to War and Peace. Let 'em fly.

I'll get the ball rolling.

I have just started Gulliver Travels by J. Swift

Everyone should read Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo

And my favourite book was the count of Monte Cristo nabridged] by A. Dumas

As you can tell I enjoy the French Romantic period.

Your turn...

The best book I have ever read is 'the master and the margarita'.

I thought it was a truly amazing piece of literature... I started reading it again the minute I had finished it.

I am not a big reader but every now and again an autobiography catches my attention. Alan sugars is a good read as is Duncan banatynes "anyone can do it" but best by a long shot was chubby browns, very funny and not what you would expect from his stage persona.

'Rugby matches I've stayed til the end of'
by any poster with 'Wigan' in their user name, is usually a good read, and something to fill your time with, whilst waiting for the toaster to pop up. In fact, you can read it 5 times, while you wait icon_wink.gif

Read this not long ago as well. Lee child books are good holiday reads.

My book should all read is Lord of the flies by William Goulding.

Current Reading The reversal by michael connelly,

I'm currently reading Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Great fantasy book. Started reading it to coincide with the airing of the tv show. I personally feel it was about time the fantasy genre got more recognition (obviously excusing Lord of the rings).

My favourite books are those of David Gemmell - a fantastic heroic fantasy writer.

Everyone should read Joe Abercrombie. If Gemmell and R.R. Martin had a kid, that would be Abercrombie.

The book I always recommend is Birdsong by Sebastien Faulk. I don't read much fiction but I picked this up while travelling in a book swap thing in a hostel and I thought it was fantastic, very powerful and haunting storyline based around the trenches of World War I

A book I got recently which I didn't think would be good, but was, is "Beyond the Crash" by Gordon Brown, he wrote it in a couple of months after being voted out last year, and it's actually a very revealing and interesting account of the financial crisis and Brown's dealings with some of the shady characters in the big banks who were trying to blag the government as well as everybody else. It's not too long a book either so one you can read quite quickly and it does shed light on what was going on.

Now reading Redemption Ark by Alistair Reynolds. He's an ex astro-physicist, so the science fiction is based very much on the art of the possible. It's brilliant stuff. Also like Iain M Banks. Best book is tricky...but probably The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks.
