They may not have done, but that is not a prerequisite for passing judgement - the old saying "you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" can apply.
I don't think booing helps individual players either, but it does convey "this aint good enough" to the powers that be if that was ever in question. It's also comes from a place of passion so I can understand it.
