| Regarding the salary cap. Four teams have won SL since its inception. 1 went spectacularly bust which tells its own story and between the other three the salary cap has been cheated 4 times...or is it 5? They will have to remind me. The absolute nerve to have a pop and suggest we're trying to buy a title. Every team would be pleased with this signing and theyre lying if they say otherwise.

Get rid of Jason Clark'"
The same Jason Clark who Greg Inglis phoned first in sounding out playing for the Wire because they are good friends.....
Yeah that would be a proper thank you For Clark....
Plus given Inglis's mental issues it would make absolute sense for Inglis to have a close friend in the squad.....
I would be astonished if we off loaded Clark now....

He can cover multiple positions so adds value as a squad player. Fully fit he could arguably push Toby King for a starting spot in the centres.

Half of those players are academy graduates playing for the love of the town, the shirt and their people. Jamie Lyon was on a journey back to the game after losing his way and wasn't on insane money. And only one of those are overseas players, domestic stars were cheaper then as the threat of a move to the NRL wasn't really there. Also a bigger cap in those days as it didn't change for many a year after that, so actual bang for your buck was at it's peak then.
Plus we may have been caught making a couple of admin errors with the cap in those days too, so everything was clearly on max.
I think the reality is that all clubs in Super League are working outside of the cap. The RFL and their auditors don't really care. I always cite standing waiting for a football match to start in Winwick and seeing some very expensive and elaborate stone being delivered to Jon Wilkin's house. We joked at the time that we should check who paid for the goods. Super League clubs owners all have interests in multiple ventures, are SL really checking everything? No chance. Overseas player signs for a SL club for £120k a year. Gets paid £200k into an offshore account for 'consultancy work' 12 months after completing his contract when in the NRL/retired. Who finds that? So many ways around the cap, I'm sure a few will come out when players release auto-biographies or get broke and sell the story in the future.

What about Wigan with Radlinski, Dallas, Renouf, Connolly, Robinson, Farrell, McDermott, Newton...they were then able to add Lam and Matty Johns

| Quote NSW="NSW"Stop me if you thinking that you’ve heard this one before. Another year another big signing. When will you ever learn that long term sustainable success comes from investment in youth. Give them time, patience.
Sign a promising young player from Widnes - play him at headingly against Konrad Hurral - fans write him off - sign Greg Inglis. It’s rather embarrassing.
But hey ho, enjoy watching his highlights from 6 years ago and get excited. Always seem to make the headlines signing players but only 3 teams make the headlines picking up the big trophy at old Trafford.'"
Someone seems upset.

I would have been pleased if Saints signed Inglis, borderline delighted, which for me is a big thing. But you are trying to buy the title. I don't think there's any shame in that? Other clubs are either trying to slash the cap to have an excuse to save money or are in a holding position to see what's left when the sport returns, you've got the cheque book out trying to gain a competitive advantage. It's ambition and a commitment to be the best they can be, there's nothing wrong with that.
The notion of Wire trying to buy the title will always be there because of your record at bringing academy players through. You do need to improve in that area, but I'm sure you realise that. There seems to be as much focus and investment in the youth development now, particularly after the Rylands team all signed elsewhere last year. Everything seemed to get ramped up last year and you definitely highlighted the right players from the next age group.

| "Buying the title"...what does that even mean? Do Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea care if they are accused of buying the title? If you have the resources to improve your team by recruiting talent then good for you. Wigan did it for an entire decade and beyond. So any fan from another club that comes on here bleating "buying the title" just looks small time and bitter. This IS ONLY a good story for Rugby League in the Northern Hemisphere. To have one of the greatest players come and resurrect his career after issues with mental health is nothing but POSITIVE. yes its a gamble...but thats Warrington's decision. Jealous fans also moan about "bringing on the youth".... how inspiring for the youth of Warrington to see a global super star...our young players will have not only a brilliant role model, a winner, but also an amazing teacher in G.I. They must be as excited as all the fans. Can't wait to see him play.

I think you would be suprised at the level of audit rights the RFL has in terms of salary cap. There have been plenty of retiring major stars who have published biographies in the last ten years, I don't recall any startling cap revelations being reported.

| The thing with this "you just bought the title" is, when a team actually wins the title their fans don't care if other people say that. Saints didn't produce Sculthorpe, Long and Newlove out of their own Academy did they.
If Wire did win the title, our fans would enjoy the moaning of Saints and Wigan fans just like City fans laugh at United.
The elephant in the room for me though is....I don't see Warrington's squad, even with Inglis and Widdop, as this all-time-great-how-do-they-get-it-under-the-cap roster that some are making out. Go and look through the squad again and ask yourself how many are genuine elite players. I count one, Daryl Clark. Four players who were in that category a few years ago but probably not in 2021: Hill, Currie, Inglis, Widdop. Then there's a handful of players in the next tier down, good but not great: Ratchford, Charnley, Lineham, Austin, Cooper. There are question marks over the coach too - is he a title-winning coach?
A team that is going to win SL needs a core of at least 3 probably 4 or 5 elite players with a supporting cast of very good players. If they have an unusually good coaching set up, they might be able to win with less (Wigan under Wane), if they have a questionable coach they need more (Saints under Millward).
Between 2010 and 2013 we had a better squad than we will have in 2021 and were good enough to win the title but unfortunately at that time there were other good teams (Leeds and Wigan) and they stopped us. The Wire squad from 2010 and 2013 if it were around in 2021 would be head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the league including Wire in 2021.
Yes I am pleased that we have signed Greg Inglis and this is the kind of ambition we should be showing. But to put in context, I was more excited from an on the field perspective when we signed Brett Hodgson who was a similar age and probably a better player at that stage. Off the field, obviously Inglis brings a status of one of the all time greats that Hodgson didn't have.
Does Inglis make us a "complete" squad ready to win the title? No...the pack isn't good enough and still too many question marks for me. But it may be more fun to watch.
