Moz ended Crabtree's involvement with a very big hit.

That team was awesome, and the style of rugby they played was ENJOYABLE.
Special mention of Johnson - a really good game from him.
Mind you I can't think of any Wire player who had a bad game that day.
Mos and Carvell were both immense.
MM and Briers - oh to see them playing like that now. Brilliant.

Quote: fez1 "Yes that was pretty special. I remember screaming from the 40m line as he broke the line and took on Mullins.
Davies probably had the highest rugby intelligence of any player I've ever seen.
In league Briers and Edwards come close. From Oz I'd choose Johns and Lockyer.
In union, Gareth Edwards and van der Westhuizen would also be close.

I remember when we stuffed Stains 20-0 at Wilderspool mid week and Davies bombed Antony Sullivan time and time again from which I think we scored 2 or 3 tries - similar to to Monas targetting Feka a few years ago.

Happy times.'"

Rugby intelligence is an interesting concept. I think we had 5 players during my time who seemed like they were ahead of most of the rest of the game in terms of knowing where to be, what plays to execute, at what time, to maximise the team's advantage: Davies and Briers like you say, the other three were Allan Langer, Michael Monaghan and Brett Hodgson.

I remember Davies bombing a young Anthony Sullivan. A few years later Briers gave him a terrible time at Wilderspool. Maybe a flakiness under the high ball was the only thing that held Sullivan being back from being one of the greats because he was a terrific runner.

Another player who got bombed into oblivion by Davies was Graham Steadman. An incredible thing about Davies was that even if he hadn't been a quick runner and had just been a stand-off with a game based around kicking (remember the Aussie Mitch Healey who played for Cronulla and Cas?), he would still have been a very effective weapon.

Is there anyone else on here old enough to remember a CC semi final against St Helens in 1972? We hadnt been to Wembley since 1954 and here suddenly we, under Murphy, were almost there. Very much the underdogs we put up a good fight. However, Saints were leading going into the last quarter until Toby DuToit scored a wonder try. Saints kicked for touch and everyone assumed the ball was going out when Toby snatched the ball out of the air and shot down the wing to score wide out. Unfortunately, the kick was missed and the game ended in a draw, but what a game.

Salford away was a good one, second half anyway. Sandow hitting the drop goal from about 40 out after the hooter had gone was electric!

There was a game away at Hull in 98' I think, Jon Roper scored the winner with about 30 seconds left after almost losing the ball but regaining it on his knee and being able to reach out and score the winner. 28-32. Cracker. Also remember that game involving a 'simultaneous' touchdown with Briers and Prescott, eventually judged a drop out despite Briers getting his hand on the ball underneath Prescotts.

Salford away in the CC QF (think Bradford battered us in the Semi), Alan Hunte scored the winner about 7-8 minutes into extra time. Mental.
