The relevant question is who is available to take over and do we have a credible sense that they are the right appointment.
If its just a case of, "oh we don't know, but we'll advertise the job and someone will apply and we'll see what happens" then you're not necessarily going to be any better off.
Maybe if you're facing relegation and the coach has a toxic relationship with the players you may as well just play the coach lottery but when you're one of the top sides (but not quite THE top side) you need to have a compelling candidate available that you can see will take you to the next level.
