No he wasn't that good a player, that was the problem.
He wasn't a top rate NRL player with a glittering career down under that only needed to go at 25% of Austin here to become a legend. That description works for Langer and Sandow but not Roberts.
He was an OK NRL player who didn't have a club down under, came over here and was just OK for us.
I don't get this idea that Roberts was some sort of lazy genius that couldn't be bothered here but if only he'd been motivated would have been a legendary halfback.
As far as raw talent goes, I would put him well below Ratchford for instance. Actually imagine if Ratchford was an Aussie who had been playing in the NRL, I bet one of their agents could tout him round the SL clubs and get him a contract as the highest paid player in the league.
