The "P” word is a racist term, often used to refer to gypsies or travellers and Roma do not like to be called “gypsy” as it is often used pejoratively in eastern Europe.

But that is not the definition of racism under the Equality Act 2010. The Equality act which refers to less favourable treatment on grounds of colour, race, or ethnic or national origins.

Which is presumably why it is a banned word on here.

Defining what "race" is, is actually a complex sociological debate, to which there is no clearly defined answer or definition.

It's generally accepted that combinations of (but not requiring all of) shared physical traits, social traits, cultural practices, perspectives, and genetics make up a race.

Race does not solely mean skin colour, or the country you're born in. Race is not biological (there are many scientific papers on this), it is a socially constructed concept.

You could argue that being a traveler is merely a choice of living style (like I might chose to live in a trendy flat in a city), but I think it's more than that. Being a traveler is more than living in a caravan (many live in houses). It is a cultural identity, with a rich historical lineage. It could be argued that they are a race.

There is no argument about it. Members of the GRT community are rightly protected under the Equality Act. So in the eyes of the law, describing someone with Roma background as a "P" is as vile as using the "N" word to describe a black person.
