I came across a souvenir booklet issued by Warrington Guardian celebrating wire winning the RL championship that season. The town hall picture shows two cups being shown to fans one of which was the Lancashire League trophy and the other the League Championship trophy, both looked like magnificent cups. I wonder what happened to the League Championship trophy and if it still exists why not award it to the team who finish first during the season. Instead of the much maligned hub cap?

It was interesting to note that Wire finished 2nd behind Wigan in the league that season but played Bradford after a top four play off. Wire beat Bradford at Maine Road in front of 69,000 fans. Hope its an omen for tomorrow.

I didnt realise that play offs for the championship are nothing new.

As an aside the booklet records that Warington schoolboys won every game but one and won their championship beating Wigan at Springfield Park infront of 15,000 spectators.

Anyway enough of history good luck to the lads from the Fylde coast.

I believe that the League Championship Trophy is held in perpetuity by Wigan. No doubt Rogues will either confirm or deny this.

Wigan do have the trophy.I remember reading a post somewhere about it a few months back something along the line of the RFL should get it back.But i believe it was the RFL that let them keep it.

they sold it to pay for Brett Kenny I think.

Wigan do still have the trophy. As for the play-offs, that was how it was, the top 4 teams only.

Anyone know where the lancs league and cup trophies are?! Pretty sure one, or possibly both, the Yorky equivalents are at the McAlpine (or whatever they call it now), though I'm not sure why!
