I presume this is to the suggestion and not that you can't think of a better idea?
GPS tracking did occur to me, but I can see this being costly to implement accurately. Could be a long term solution though...

What?

We've had this on the Wigan forum, even if the trajectory of the ball is forward, that doesn't mean that the pass is forward.
Oh, and as a general idea, I think it's terrible.

Couln't help laugh at the irony of you asking 'what' and having an avatar of Einstein!! Sorry...
To answer the 'what' question, basic angles really. If the angle from the player is level or backwards then this is a fair pass. The angle can easily be measured from an overhead camera view using the processing power of the modern computer...

| Using a computer to act as a protractor and calculate the angle of the pass - geometry.

Because people have been asking the same question for years. This latest argument came about because of yesterday and has been carried on by those Wigan fans who have conveniently forgotten that a similar pass won them the RL Cup last season. There isn't an answer to it.

| Fair point about the forward pass against Wigan, and I did use that as the principal to start this post.
Even so, I have thought for quite a while now that too many are being missed - and appreciate officials are only human. Consequently, could we realistically use modern technology to assist them?

| Please can you elaborate as I would like to know your reasoning? Is it the over-use of technology, or do you think there is an acceptable level of tolerance that should be allowable?
