I would have said the peak years of his career were 2004-2006 where he was consistent and was the best British centre in the game at the time. After that he was still a great player on his day but he was a bit more hit and miss. Seeing as he only had half a season in 2004 at Saints (where he was in superb form before his ban) and was very good in the international series at the end of the winter, we made a great signing at the time and not only enjoyed his best form but also the Gleeson signing was the one that started us off in terms of being able to attract top players by showing we were serious.
Would Andrew Johns have thought about joining us had we not had Gleeson and been 4th in the league....?
We also got good money and Mathers for him and had we hung on to him another year I don't know if we'd have been able to get as much back so although I've always been a Gleeson fan I think we did well out of the deal.
Aspinwall I wouldn't touch with a bargepole it's clear his problem is drink, he gets wasted then acts up and gets in trouble and then claims remorse after it. He has got a drink problem because it is affecting his life and his relationships with other people but if he can't face up to it all that will happen is these incidents repeat themselves, he will be sacked from Hull and end up a drunken loser and probably back in prison.'"
Can't disagree with any of that, maybe what we lost on the two Gleeson deals could be written off as depreciation. I've always been amazed at the negativity that Wigan fans displayed towards him from the moment he signed for them. He was always on a loser.
Aspinwall is one of those players who will always make a mess of things. The only thing he could possibly do to improve his life is to give up the drink completely, and he won't do that. Hull seem to be a club that will always take a chance on that sort of player and its cost them in the last 12 months with Tansey and Gleeson sacked and Aspinwall in trouble before hes even played a game.
