Quote: Ian 77 Redux "Referring to ourselves as League Champions as as tiresome as referring to ourselves as Challenge Cup Champions was. Firstly, it's small time and desperate. Secondly, it belittles the achievements of actually finishing first or winning the Challenge Cup (which are fantastic). Thirdly, it almost pre-emptively cheapens any potential Grand Final win if we manage to pull that one off.
We're League Leaders Shield winners for now. We ought to be delighted with that. The Champions are decided via the Playoffs. We have to win at Old Trafford on 8 October 2011 in order to call ourselves that. If you saw the player's reaction on Friday night, you'll know they agree with me.'"
I think the clue is in the title of the 'trophy'. League Leaders implies that the race isn't yet over. Racehorses, athletes, motor racing drivers, etc can all be 'leaders' - none can be winners/champions until it's all over, which the RL season self-evidently isn't.
