I was at James on Saturday and saw Tony Smith in the VIP section to the right of the stage. Also saw James at Liverpool Academy earlier this year and was stood next to Dave Woods (BBC commentator).
I saw Wilco Johnson a few weeks back at Manceshter Acad and would highly recommend.
I've also been to Madness and Paul Weller recently, both very good concerts although some of PW's stuff just doesn't suit a live gig.
The best concert this year was From The Jam at the Cavern in July. I have never been so hot in my life but what a night.
U2, Morrissey, Springsteen, Editors, Oasis, The Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, We Are Scientists, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, Razorlight, Lost Prophets, The Subways, British Sea Power....amongst others.
Without a doubt the best band I've seen live is a group called Delays, lesser known but well worth looking into if you appreciate good bands.
