Think the reference was due to the fact that the British Empire doesn't exist any more and half the countries in the Commonwealth want to leave anyway. Nothing to do with how much effort athletes put into training.

Going to India - well I could and did predict the run up and pre Games organization would be a fiasco.
My dealings with some of the industrial companies in that country leave me in no doubt that India had a long way to go before it could run this event.
Far too many times they say 'yes yes yes' and then can't deliver. We've all but stopped dealing with them becuase of that.
Having said that - some of their HiTech companies are superb. Infosys for one.

In India you have the 'haves' living alongside the 'have nots' - a £1M mansion alongside a one roomed tin hut with 6 people living in it.

I don't blame the likes of the cycling and divers not going.
India would have been a good choice in a few years when they've developed more.
