bit before my time, does anyone remember him. Legend Cec Mountfoerd, the ex-Wigan and warrington half-back, has died.
he was the first Kiwi to win the Lance Todd Trophy, in 1951, Coached warrington to the league and cup double in 1954 and also coached blackpool (1972-73) and New Zealand(1979-82).
mountford was awarded an MBE in 1987 for his services to New Zealand league and in 1990 was an inaugural inductee into his countries Hall of Fame.
sounds like a legend to me.
Mountford never coached Wigan. He went back to New Zealand after leaving Warrington in 1961. He had asked for a ten-year contract extension but the board were only able to offer five years. He was a brilliant stand off for Wigan and a good coach for us but his best team (1951-56) was mainly inherited from Chris Brockbank. He came back to coach Blackpool in the early 70's without much success.
