| Would of thought London would of voted for it, They brought Gower and Sandlow in, they made a massive difference to them
If teams were to get a Marquee signing, big names/ stars, every clubs attendances would go up, so benefiting ALL the clubs, especially the clubs who cannot afford them

All stems from here -
The link provided has a quote about not even knowing where St Helens is.This is incongruous to the fact that as a former chief exec then he must surely know the location.
It was your local paper that first reported/confirmed the Dr K interest and he was quoted as saying that Saints were in 'good hands'. rlNo Suggestion Of Saints Interestrl

Was Craig Gower a marquee signing in the sense of the word though?
Would you be happy if Marwan spent a million quid on a player like that, a 30 something Journey man who was never close to troubling the best player in the world tag. He was most famous for his misdemeanors than his rugby skills.
its clubs signing this type of player for massive money that worries me over the marquee signing rule.
Blake Ferguson is trying to get a deal anywhere now after his indecent assault conviction. should we be targeting players like that as a marquee signing ... no we shouldnt.
Joel Monaghan came over here after his 'episode' and was paid accordingly, only his continued exemplary behaviour and outstanding play has ensured he is now a star of the game and one of our top earners.
To me a Marquee player is a Ben Barba now, a Billy Slater now a Jarryd Hayne now or a Greg Inglis now, not when they are well into their 30's. I just don't see us ever being able to tempt those players away from the NRL.
The NRL have a clear policy of over-turning the AFL as the number one code in Australia and they are doing it on the back of increased TV revenues. we are way behind soccer cricket and union but above Darts we don't stand a chance.
We should concentrate on getting Marquee people to run the game first, and that is not Brian Barwick and certainly not Nigel wood.

| I would have thought a Warrington fan would be more than positive about this exemption, particularly after witnessing first hand the Andrew Johns effect had on their club and town. If I remember rightly, didnt they sell out his first game in a Warrington shirt? If they exemption was available, could Simon Moran have afforded to sign Johns for 12/24 months? Of course he could.
I find the whole arguement of Super League clubs failing to attract NRL superstars such as Billy Slater and Cameron Smith as complete rubbish. If the exemption rule is passed and not one player comes over after 5 years, then you can use such an argument but until then you cant say.

I wouldn't class Craig Gower as a marquee signing. The solution, then, is to define what a 'marquee signing' is. You could stipulate that to qualify as one, the player has to have played at least one full international in the past 12 months, for example, or you could be required to demonstrate that the loss of that player to Australia or to union would have a detrimental effect on the sport in the UK.

i was not inferring clubs should or would bring in veterans. My intention, was to point out, the difference to clubs of the pluses to team playing performance and increased attendances both home and away. Although in Londons case I don't think it made much difference

Quote: "Only Wigan, Warrington, Leeds and Widnes, along with the Red Devils, supported Koukash's idea of making a high-profile signing exempt from the Super League salary cap at a meeting at Hull's KC Stadium on Wednesday.'"
the surprise is Widnes voting in favour. not surprised with the 3rd world east pennines teams with Leeds the exception.

| Widnes have stated they wouldn't look to sign a marquee player for this year, but can see the benefits it would bring the game and competition as a whole. Shame common sense seems to only exist in Lancashire.

| I think Furguson might have been on the Docs radar, rightly or wrongly with his previous.
Would be a marquee signing in anyones books if he hadn't got the dubious history he has, the fact that he has converted to Islam I'm sure would have endeared him to the Doc.

In what way? I meant in all seriousness. Didn't the Doc either take or offer to take SBW to his local Mosque when he was courting him during the world cup?
I'd imagine that the Doc might work on the angle of continuing to aide his moral and spiritual rehabilitation.

| You talk about what you see as a marquee player for SL, and you’re throwing names about such as Slater and Thurston. Thurston is on 1 Million AUS dollars a season – Works out at around 550 K a year, Now unless he has a dying wish to play in ESL (Why on earth would anyone from the NRL) I would imagine if you chuck a good 200 thousand pounds on top of that he might even start to consider it, Even then NQC would could just match that in a heart beat.
Even then Money a side, why would he trade in playing in the best league in the world, playing in front of big crowds – Brilliant press coverage into what we call a `Professional` sport that’s failing big time – In fact the only reason 12 out of 14 teams are still running is the fact that they have millionaire backers that could at any point pull their money out of the club.
This is no way a dig at Salford and Dr, I’ve said for years if Ken Davey pulled out tomorrow where would that leave the Huddersfield players? Unpaid, looking for a new club – To be fair ourselves (Wakefield) & Bradford having painted the British game in a good light at all but I’m afraid at the moment the exactly the way it is.
In reality the marquee players we should be talking about are players that are to a NRL Standard, and that would actually get into their teams over there.
Id like to say one day that we could compete with AUS in terms of money in the game, and fan base but in reality that`s not going to happen - It`s been pushed and pushed by the RFL, i think with the removal of franchises even they have finally accepted it`s just a northern game.

I think the marquee players Marwan is talking about are NRL standard players. He's made genuine bids for Sam Tomkins and SBW, and wanted to bid for Sam Burgess but needed the marquee player exemption to do so. Had the marquee player exemption been voted in, he already had a player lined up and ready to come over. Word on the street is that player was Billy Slater. This might be true or it might not be, but given the calibre of player he's been chasing, it doesn't sound too far fetched.
It's true that the NRL is a better competition, so much so that our better players are attracted there, both by the standard of competition and by the money on offer. There's a circular relationship between these two: the more money you can offer, the better the player you attract. The better the player you attract, the better the competition and the more money you bring in. The more money you bring in, the more you can offer to the better players. The NRL are on this path, while we, despite the new TV deal, are on the opposite path.
So, we can either accept that this is the way things have to be until some future, unspecified date when suddenly everything in the northern hemisphere will turn out rosy (the Castleford argument, basically), or we can make a stand now. Making a stand has to start with bringing better players over here, and that has to start with tempting them away from where they are now by offering barrow loads of money. That's the marquee exemption, in a nutshell.
