I suspect most would have originally been from the Central Salford/Weaste area and would have moved away over time with family and kids. This would suggest that a big factor in getting new fans would be to have the Stadium at the centre of the community and easily accessible to most people. In contrast, as not many people are from Barton now and the stadium isn't very close to many communities it would mean we lose out on this way of attracting new fans. In the long run, this could be dangerous for our attendances.'"
I actually don't think the results would be greatly different if people answered where they grew up. I think people interested in RL be it through exposure on the TV or kids learning it at school or local Clubs have a larger bearing on interest these days, and for quite a while. You will always pull a certain amount from the local area, but the pull has been pretty much dead for a while now. The reasons? I don't know. Apathy? Dwindling interest? Lack of success? You can't say 'Club in the heart of the community' would change things. The Willows has had slowly decaying numbers and interest since the seventies. I've known plenty of people that lived within spitting distance of the Willows and they wouldn't even know the place existed. But the results are plain to see. If the fickle Salford public want a winning side before they return, then the Club is going to have to try further afield to get in, and hold onto, new support. Judging by the figures, there's fans away from Salford to be had. Pushing the product in these areas can only be a good thing. It plainly doesn't mean a loss of identity. It seems a large majority of hardcore Salford fans are not Salfordians anyway and still identify with the Club. If the Club can grab more from outside the area and hold onto them, it would negate the need for owners to look at 'other options'.
That's why we should be getting behind initiatives like taking a game on the road. Not because it's a sinister prelude to something else.

There's plenty of housing within a 15 minute walk from AJ Bell. We should start our marketing/promotion/development there and work outwards.
All this stuff about "being at the heart of the community" is pointless unless you (or someone you know) is going to stump up the cash for another new stadium.
Rather than moaning about stuff that you simply cannot change, we need to take positive action to get the most over our current situation.

| I wonder if there was the same reaction, all those years ago when Salford, relocated to the Willows surrounded by fields in the middle of nowhere ?

I'll get on that later with the same options.
I think a weakness (or opportunity, depending on whether your glass is half full), from the results of the voting so far is that we have fewer votes in Eccles/Barton/Winton than we have in Wigan, or Bolton, or Tameside, or Yorkshire. As Wayward Fan says, this area is where we should be targetting to be the new generation of walk up fans. There are plenty of homes within a 10 minute walk of the Peel Green roundabout.
From the voting (so far) we have 84% of fans who aren't (or weren't) used to just being able to walk to the Willows, so if we can build a walk up support round Barton then there's plenty of scope for improvement.
Quote: MarioRugby "am i missing something here??? cant see any place to vote?'"
What device/browser are you using? If you're logged in and can see the list of options, then there should be a button to choose an answer. If you're logged in and can already see the scores against the list then either somebody has already voted against you account, or they may have voted from the same IP address (I'm not 100% sure if repeat vites are restricted by IP as well as username).

| Although getting "walk-ups" would be a good idea, I fear it needs more than that. The day a person wakes up and thinks, "Ee, I'll go to t' rugby" have gone. Even people living close to Barton will need a reason to go. These days, where a fan lives is less important than the image of the club and its marketing. if United and City can filll stadiums in far-off countries, we should be stealing ideas from them.
Locke as a new Beckham, Chase as a harder Nasri, Mozza as Giggs.
We need to make ourselves very visible where people go for leisure: cinemas, in town (e.g. Printworks),and other sports. We need to be linking to City and United so younger football fans think of trying the experience out once their season finishes.
Interesting where we all live. One poster on here could say "France" and be right. He attends most matches. How do you market him?

| Just looking at the population stats for Salford (And its borough's) if just 5% of the population of the City of Salford turned up at matches we'd average 11,700 (roughly) add to the those who do travel from outside the city to watch you wouldn't get in the ground and then there's the away fans....
Currently I'd predict we're at around just 1 1/2% of the citys population.
5 percent, just 5 bleedin' percent!

| It's a poor show, but there are nuances in Salford that are pretty unique for a British city. There is the old chestnut about how much affinity those in Cadishead, Worsley and Little Hulton have with Salford. (I won't give Swinton the satisfaction!) And yet here, most of our fans live there.

| Very interesting topic!
I've had my fair share of travelling to attend matches. Currently live near Walkden, so it's now going to be an easy trek for me. However, for the previous 22 years I lived in Chorley so a little more travel involved. During that 22 year period, I also had some prolonged times living and working abroad: 4 years in Madrid (2003-2007), and I "commuted" to around 20 matches over that period via Easy Jet; and 12 months in Bangkok (2013), whereby I only managed 3 matches as I tended to come back to the UK every 7 or so weeks for a week but couldn't get in-synch with the fixtures!
So, it's back to being a season ticket holder now!
Was born in Seedley, and my grandfather lived on Weaste Road. He used to work at the Willows, so my indoctrination started early!
