| Quote: Nankivell "There is currently a great deal of discussion about Player Development, particularly around 15 and 16 years old players. The amateur Leagues are working to protect the amateur game from the ravages of the pro clubs on its players - wanting to take roughly twenty of each age group into the pro environment of each SL club. In the North West, that's 100 per age group they want to own.
By the time they get to 19, they fall into one of three categories. They have made Super League (very few), they will not make Super League, and are discarded, many never to play rugby league again, or are "maybes".
Many forwards are maybes. How many forwards are the done deal at 19, 20 or 21 plus?
The alternative is the loan or dual registration arrangement. If a lower league club has a Salford player on loan, but has a full complement of players who they have signed, is the loan player going to be played? No!
Where, then, do these players, who are not quite ready for SL first team, but unwanted by the club to whom they have been loaned, actually play?
The RFL's answer was that it wanted U23 teams. The SL clubs rejected that idea on cost grounds, preferring to go with Loan and Dual Reg.
The progression path for forwards in particular, but young players in general, is extremely limited by the system within which they play.
It would appear that buying in from elsewhere is the preferred option. And if you speak with an Australian accent, you must be good!'"
The last quote is the biggest problem in British RL.

This is the big problem with RL in this hemisphere.
The reason the Aussie game is awash with talent is because of the clear pathway from U10's to Grade A first team. There's no conflict of interest between the amateur and the professional. In this country BARLA has always been self-interested first to the detriment of young players. Until we sort a clear pathway from Amateur to Pro we'll always fail to produce the number of talented players that Australia do. We rely on the outdated practice of Clubs scouting Young players instead of Clubs developing potential from an early age. It means that far too many talented lads slip through the net unnoticed or noticed but not developed.

I agree, no U23, s comp has left a huge void in devlopment, and DR has been unstructured and either abused or rejected in the championships.
It's a tragegy if George Tyson has gone the same way as Will Hope. Of the academy players Tyson looked the most likely to step up next. We cannot keep losing lads that put 4/5 years into the game.

| Something struck me when watching last night, with BJB signing it's doubtful that Griffin will get a start on the wing but with his kicking skills we'd be daft not too have him on the pitch.
I'd look at trying him at #13, has the size and can tackle so with his pace he'd be a real asset down the middle.

If there was no quota for homegrown players, how many of these would still be at the club. I doubt even Evalds as he was out in the cold for quite a while.
We need to stop buying mediocre players and use our own, whos gonna play the Walnes or groat. It shouldnt even be a question !!!
All the top sides give their youngsters a chance, and we do have some good young talent, admittedly not as much as other clubs but we do have it..

I think he is in the right position at left centre. Quick and tall and can take the `bombs` which will come next year from Chase & Dobbo.

| I get the impression MCB will start next year significantly bulked up, he has the pace but is not big enough physically.

| I fully expect our backs to be Locke, BJB, J.Grffin, Sau & Johnson. With Evalds & MCB providing cover.

| So we sign a 22 years old prop with only 1 SL match to his credit while we have lads of a similar age, with more, waiting for their chance to make their mark. I must be missing something. Or maybe it's not me?

You're jumping the gun a bit on this. I know you've got a bee in your bonnet about this subject, but there's one thing you've not taken into consideration.
Next seasons squad hasn't been announced yet. You may find some of the Academy lads will step up yet. Or maybe the lads making that step are not in the right positions for the coach?
I'm not making excuses as I want the Academy to produce the bulk of our talent for the future, but you must realise it's not just an automatic jump up, regardless of talent, into the first team. You have to remember that there will be a handful of lads knocking on the door, and depending on their position/game style/skills might not be brought in for various reasons. Say we had a really good lad coming through as a fullback. He'd be unlucky because he'd not dislodge Locke or Evalds. He's not being ignored.
It's a fact of life in the game that young lads will fall out of the dragnet. It doesn't mean a Club is ignoring them. Players have to be the right fit at the right time.

Which of our lads of a similar age who are waiting for a chance to make their mark have just been nominated alongside Ryan Brierley (who as we all know has had a fantastic season) for the Championship Young Player of the Year award? Ridiculous that you can find something to moan about with regards to this signing.
I'm inclined to discount the posts I have read from St Helens fans about Forster, after all he's only played once for them. I must say the comments from the Whitehaven fans though is very positive, they have obviously seen much more of him and it sounds like we have got a fantastic young player. If he can go anything like Chris Hill, Alex Walmsley and Kyle Amor who are three more recent players to come from the Championship into Super League and a make an impact then it will be a fantastic signing.
Plus, it's another young British lad who will slot in alongside Niall Evalds, Greg Johnson, Jason Walton, Josh Griffin, George Griffin, Mason Caton-Brown, Jordan Walne, Adam Walne, Liam Hood and Luke Menzies. I like what Harris is trying to do, very Wigan-esque.
