| Quote: TheButcher "Feel a bit sorry for him, actually.
He's been kicked out for sleeping in by half an hour.
Before anyone says it was for the drinking, it can't be as the other six or seven players that did it are still in the squad. It sounds like half the team were fed-up with slipping-up to Italy and went out for stress relief. Been made a scapegoat imo.
It does highlight a severe problem with the ability of McNamara as a coach to man manage correctly. Hock is quite popular among the squad and the already small amount of respect McNamara garners will be blown away now.
You can harp on all day about professionalism this and that with players. National pride and all that. But if the players are not happy with anything then no amount of National pride will make a team gel.'"
Can't agree with the top bit saying he's a scapegoat. If all the others involved turned up for the training session then why should he get away with not turning up? People who get caught doing 35mph in a 30mph zone almost always feel hard done by but they've definitely done wrong. So has Hock.
Definitely agree with the very bottom bit though. Pride in the shirt only gets you so far. As does talent and application.

Like you say, we are full of good 2nd rowers - Westwood and George B are the two big hitters really. And if Farrell is on the bench then that's fine by me.
If we don't win the world cup, it won't be cause hock wasn't playing. The Aussies would find him out, and I can guarantee it hasn't gone unnoticed by them that he ahs the potential to be a penalty machine'"
IF we don't win the world cup?! I think it's pretty much a given that we wont!

| to be fair, we are only 2 games away from winning it reeeeally. And with the quality of the players, they are more than capable of stepping up to the plate for 2 matches,
It's the coach I've got doubts over. Until I see any result of any sort from him (which let's face it, he hasn't done with GB or with Bradford) then I'll continue to be skeptical.
But we won't win it if we are lenient to players for choosing which training sessions to attend.
Unfortunately we can argue til blue in the face - he is the only one responsible for his actions, and only has himself to blame with the whip getting cracked on him - regardless of the severity.
The worst thing is he has had the potential of a glittering career and has continually let himself down.

| jesus christ how is it McMamara fault if he goes out and gets ed and doesn't report for the training camp the next day? If anything he has dealt with it correctly no ing around and make special exemptions for players.
As a Wigan fan we have had to make excuse for him more than once and he always tries to victimize himself and some fall for it but at the end of the day he screwed up and been treated as he should.

No need to bring Christ into it.
If you wanna go back in time it is an attitude not disimilar to the pit owners who treated the workforce disgracefully.
Here,we have a head coach of a team of elite sportsmen, backed by the brains of the RFL who appointed him, with sports psychologists, all presumably staying at the same place,Loughborough University, and just prior to what is billed as the most important International rugby league event in the world,Gareth Hock is informed of his fate BY TELEPHONE ?
What way is that to treat a fellow human being ? What kind of management is that ?
Even in past years the soccer people, even southern softie Hoddle, told Gascoigne his fate face to face.
If you and your Wigan lot are glad he's gone;excellent.
No further need to comment. You're happy.

| I agree with your message if not its delivery.
The matter suggests something else has been going on: in SA or in training. Managing sports persons is very different from (say) an office and I could point to many many references to support that statement.
I do not think Mac has helped himself in this.

| Apparently the players had been told no drinking until after the Australia game! Am I the only one who thinks surely the players should be on a blanket ban until they get knocked out.
Shouldn't be hard for professional sportsmen to go without a shandy for a few weeks during what will for some be their only tilt at a world cup.
Hell they could have gone too A&E down Liverpool Road if they wanted stress relief

How else are you supposed to get in contact with some one if they aren't where they are supposed to be? your just playing ignorant to the fact he has done wrong been punished and now is selling his story to the news. pit owners and workforce what the hell are you going on about? this is professional rugby league and a so called athlete.
And i would prefer he got a shot at the Aussies but not if he is acting like a spanner the week before.

| OK I'm biased ,I admit it.
I'd heard somewhere a few months ago that Hock had said that he didn't expect the call up because McNamara didn't get on with him.
I agree that they shouldn't have been out drinking but it was 'they' and the coach couldn't send them all home.
He took the easy route by penalising him for missing the 10 minute swimming session.
If he had gone swimming he wouldn't have been sent home??
If a non drinker had missed swimming he wouldn't have been sent home.
So,my point is that the indiscretion was the drinking but he was singled out from the rest.
Because of his reputation he was a soft target,as confirmed by the posts on here.
I stress that I'm biased !

Gareth Hock stated he received 2 telephone calls. One informing him the head coach was aware that he had been drinking - the second phone call to tell him of the punishment.
Where do you get the nonsense from about him 'selling his story to the news'?
The pit owner and workforce was a reference to the antediluvian management practices as demonstrated by the head coach and the RFL.
I'm sure the viewers of the VT appreciate your comments and prejudices.Would you please just keep posting on there.

| According to the interview he gave, he missed the swimming session AND a medical, then the phone discussion with Macbanana "didn't go too well"
Sometimes you just have to take responsibility for your own actions.

we was the exact same when he was at wigan, but no its not because he got drunk its because he didn't show up for training because he was drunk. two breaches and not one.

As if i would believe anything hock would say until he learns how to own up and take responsibility, even in his interview he was drip feeding the information that would make him hard done too. He has sold his story before and i have no doubt he will try to benefit finically from this.
Why would i not post on here its not as if i am spreading lies or deliberately trying to whined up salford fans.
