| Both teams made mistakes, but it shows we've got something we've not had for a long time. We can play better and/or more consistent, but we've still won away from home against a good side.
That's got to be encouraging for Salford fans, no?

| Quote: martin13 "Smith made a big mistake not finding touch with a penalty, asides from that he was alright, mullaney needs to learn how to catch a ball, he did very well after his dithering early in the second half.
Meli got a hattrick but could have done so much more, morley was a very good influence, chase was as good tonight as he was bad on friday.
Overall a very good performance, but too many mistakes still.
Great atmosphere in the salford end, well done to the doc and the club for the free coaches.'"
I don't think Jake Mullaney has a problem catching the ball, more with his positioning or losing it in flight. When he's in the right position he's usually pretty good under the high ball, even when surrounded by opposition players, as he showed last night. Sometimes, though, he's nowhere near it, and there seems to be some confusion over whose ball it should be.

| FB is a real no win position. Everyone else in the team gets a few 'free passes' when they make a mistake or two. A FB doesn't get any. If they drop a ball, or miss a tackle it's a disaster that everyone sees and points a finger at. I'm rarely critical of FB's because of this, it's a thankless position. I think Mullaney has showed he's been a very astute signing so far. I don't think there's much to be gained over analyzing his performances which have been pretty good so far.

Meli always does the minimum and he never jumps to challenge for a ball so don't hold your breath hoping for more than what you got last night! We waited for years but it never arrived.
Well done on what was a real fighting win. I listened to the match on 5 live sports extra (excellent coverage) and the game sounded like a really good contest.

I'm wondering if it's more a team problem than a full back problem. On the high kicks that get missed, there's usually a group of Salford players around where the ball lands but none of them have gone for it - and often there are players closer to it than Jake Mullaney. It's like there's some confusion over whose ball it is.

Confidence and ability.
When a ball goes up, some players guts turn over at the thought and pressure of taking it. Nobody wants that pressure, which is why FB is such a specialist role. That indecision comes from players who doubt their own ability, which is completely human. It's a real mental issue.
Players just need to have the confidence to have a go. Anyone who thinks that pro sportsmen wouldn't have these doubts hasn't played.

Agreed. I also think it's a potential positioning problem as well. A fair few of the ones Mullaney misses actually bounce with him struggling to get to them.
That said he showed superb bottle last night to nail that kick after the game he'd had.

agreed . we'll be hit & miss for a time yet until the team settles .
Mullaney already looks a solid aquisition , but his positioning under the high ball has let him down. He's only 23 , he could turn out to be some buy.
there were also fundamental errors across the park , both Chase & Smith both missed one on one tackles for two of the Hull Tries and Meli stood motionless for a crossfield kick try.
the only thing that will sort out these errors will be time . The team getting used to the attacking plays & defensive structure. that in itself will build confidence & confidence will create better performances .
It will be interesting to see with Harris joining the coaching team they'll be more opportunity to iron out the defects .

| Said before the start of the season that Mullaney could well end up being the star buy of the 14 new names & 1 of our better imports for many a year.
Watched the highlights and I'm sorry Meli wants shooting for standing like a statue when the Hull cross field kick came to his wing. Getting a hat trick is always impressive but he really let himself and others down with that non effort.

| I'm still on a high from last night. I know there were errors a-plenty from both sides and we gave away too many penalties, but I think it was arguably the most exciting game I've ever seen.
At 18 - 10 with a penalty, I thought we were on our way, but we missed touch, went in 18 - 16 up and then started the second half badly. I think we were ten points down twice and seemingly on our way out. To come back from that was what made the win so special.
Mullaney's touch line conversion with the last kick of normal time will never be forgotten by those who were there. We knew it was going over when the Hull crowd went quiet. He'd had a bit of a nightmare earlier too with bouncing bombs and a pass into touch. It was greatly to his credit that he kicked it. ( I think he's relatively safe under a bomb; his problem seems to be getting under it! )
I don't know about other people who were there last night, but I do think the stadium announcer could have informed us that we were entering "Golden Point" Extra Time. Around us some, including myself, thought it was golden point, but others were certain it was ten minutes of extra time followed by golden point. Thus when Chase's field goal went over we celebrated, but it took a few more seconds before we realised we'd won. It was only as the Hull players slumped to their knees and the Salford players started jumping about that we knew we'd won!
I'm now hoping that we draw the lowest ranked team at home in the next round. I don't know whether my nerves could stand another extra time special!!

| If we drew Sheffield or Oldham would our on loan players be allowed to turn out?
Think agent Sneyd did a good job of hindering Castleford so I don't see why not.

| the last 5 high balls mullaney was under last night he took pretty comfortably , because he didn`t have a salford shirt in his peripheral vision , doesn`t matter what opposition player is running at him aslong as there isn`t a reds shirt to close he`s pretty sound , tim smith look pretty shot , wasn`t just the penalty straight into talanoa`s hands he was so indecisive with that bobbling ball from the hull kick off , all he had to do was dive on it but it was it like he had to dive on a grenade , hopefully the bradford game may be a game to get his confidence up
