Selling Matty smith says to me we are just in league to make up the numbers. What is the chances that will be waisted and don't spend it on replacements. No wonder we don't get big gates selling smith who is next. I won't be renewing my ticket next year. They come out every year we will do this and do that it's all tripe are club is . They have to have to give free tickets out every week to get people to turn up. We didn't get big gates when he was here, so how will selling him cause a problem?

He was going at the end of the season anyway, because a club with more fans and more money could offer him a better contract and a better chance of winning a trophy. If Salford can make some money by releasing him early, then it sounds like sensible business to me.

A good move commercially. Money to pay the wages as no home game for ages and a fee we would never have had come September.

icon_lol.gif I would if it wasn't raining outside. I'm going to stay in and cry instead, cutting Smith's face out of pictures in programmes and on posters etc.

I wonder who'll line up in the halves at the game on Sunday then? A loss will all but eliminate our already slim playoff hopes. Depending on how Sunday goes, we can bring in a few of the youngsters and try some different combinations.

Get a grip, we're talking about Matty Smith. He's not the messiah, he's an average srum half! Who on earth will we find to kick the ball down the oppositions throat, continually miss tackles and run at the line rarely trying to break it.

There's no way he's even close to having Dunemann's, or even Robinson's, influence.

For me , its not a case of losing a great player , cos I dont think Smith was that great. I just feel angry that we cant seem to keep hold of players and the big teams just seem to take them at will !!. [perhaps sour grapes ]

How can Wigan afford to sign another player if already paying the full salary cap?

Unfortunately it's never going to change unless the club gets some new investment or our crowds increase by about 2,500 - 3000 a match. The easy thing is identifying the problems the extremely hard part will be finding realistic solutions. Could things be done better? I would imagine so but enough to stop us being a feeder club? I don't think so.

Good question. My guess is Salford will continue to pay him and Wigan will reimburse Salford.

Amos Roberts retired earlier in season, we sold Joel Tomkins and didn't bring in a like for like replacement so we had plenty of cap room left.

I reckon Long will dust his boots off for the remainder of the season starting with the Widnes games.

Quote: Prestwich Red "Hes Back Missed me have u?? Well seeing as we lost a representative Australian in Ryan Hoffman and then England international in Joel Tomkins both replaced from within the club, Hock and Goulding. We replaced Andy Coley with Eric Lauaki who will be on similar wages. Signed Anthony Gelling from Auckland Vulcans so he won't be on mega money! RFL made salary cap rule changes to allow us to give Sam his big contract and not take up the full amount on the cap. Add to that Amos Roberts retirement who will of been on pretty big amount as it was on same contract he arrived on. Also isn't there a rule u can spend a certain amount of profit on the cap? And unlike some clubs wigan actually operate with a profit icon_smile.gif

so we have it in one Wigan can spend more than the cap, so not a level playing field, looking at the Wigan squad there is no way they are not at full cap so Matty will take them further over. The RFL have no balls when it comes to the salary cap, Wigan caught three times cheating combined total loss of points 6, JCWWRL you are in cloud cuckoo land if you think Wigan have any space under the cap, perhaps a couple of players might play for nothing again to get below the cap, or Matty's partner is being employed as a consultant?

Oh and Sean O'loughlin is only 50% on the cap as too will Harrison Hansen next season I believe as players who have 10 year service at a club get half tbeir salary taken off the cap.

The Wigan team that is chock full of Academy players? They might be substantially better than anything Salford run out, but they're not on substantial wages.
