| Quote: Salford 1961 "Good Point Butcher. I've been saying this for years. The Likes of Warrington, Leeds and until recently Wigan have had top class internationals but no-one bats an eyelid. Woe betide little old Salford to sign a few class players and we "Must be Breaking the Cap".
Again, not a go at the likes of Warrington, Leeds or Wigan just an observation of fans opinions!'"
I dont think this entirely true saying no one bats an Eye lid at other clubs, When We signed Matt King Wigan fans were certain they had it on good Authority that Matt King was definitely on £500,000 a year.....
BJB isnt a marquee signing by any stretch of the imagination I cant imagine he would have been paid more than Jodie Broughton....but who knows, in fact the only salary of a player I have ever knew for certain was Andy Coley's last Salford contract. other than that I guess like every body else.
I dont think BJB is pushing Salford over the £1.65million salary cap.

| Quote: TheButcher "I know a lot of fans of both our Club and others constantly seem to wave the 'Cap flag' whenever we do anything. With every signing there's always at least a handful of people mentioning the 'C' word. I was thinking about this the other day and people don't seem to allow common sense to seep into their reasoning, or simply don't actually give it genuine thought.
This is not a go at anyone, by the way, just an observation.
You have a team like Leeds who we've just signed BJB off, or Wigan with Hansen for example. Teams that are considerably better, successful, and more expensive than ours. We recruit a few better players into a 'lower standard' side, yet people constantly bring up cap this and that. Even though they are not privvy to anyones or organisations finances. I find it strange that fans from teams that include current Internationals scattered liberally throughout not only their first choices but reserves too, don't question how their team can manage not to raise the question of cap space. Yet when a 'lower' team with about half the quality of players signs a couple of decent players, we must be over the cap.
That is not a go at Leeds or Wigan, I was just using them as an example because we've signed players off them.
I also get the feeling that people's guesses at wages of RL players would be considerably higher than they are in actuality. I'd hope that as a Club we will be surfing close to the cap ceiling come the start of next season. If we have the money we should spend it.
I guess that most people jump to conclusions based on very little'"
I think fans of teams like Wigan (me) tend to assume that, because a player has joined a club towards the bottom end of the league (not a dig, just a fact), they are being paid more than if they where to join a team at the top end of the league

| The problem is that players play for my club for the honour and glory of playing for my club. They love my club. They play for your club for the money. The only thing that could entice a player from my club to your club is money. It's a short career after all. I heard the player was on ([ipluck figure out of thin air[/i) £100,000 for the honour and glory of playing for my club, so now he's gone to your club, he must be on at least ([ipluck another figure - higher than the first - out of thin air[/i) £150,000. If we then randomly assign salary figures to every player in your squad, we can pretty quickly come to the conclusion that you're over the cap. Boo. Cheats.
Never underestimate the RL fan's ability to autoagitate. Never underestimate your own ability to ignore it.

Quote: middleman "Source ?
according to Locke the offer last season was actually Penrith, and it was his club that rejected not the player as he wanted to stay , situation changed though with Tomkins arrival.'"
My source is www.thekennel.net.au (I can't be bothered finding the posts on the matter) - I'm a doggies fan - like I say, that was the speculation (probably due to it was the same offer they made for Hoffman), it seems a reasonable number and, a little rounding down for overinflated estimates takes an offer to £200k for Salford (at a guess) which again seems reasonable for the player to move over here ...
Like I say though, all of it requires deduction - and of course some times estimate cap values snowball (as has happened on the hull board with bjb - starts with Salford outbid hull and Warrington, then it's well I heard Warrington offered 120k so it must be at least 130k, then it's Salford had offered 130k to 120k and bjb chose Warrington before Salford upped again etc until some fans reckon your paying 200k for a player probably on 75k (which was my guess in the first place)

I have posted elsewhere in this thread my thoughts about why players might choose one Club over another. Without repeating myself, it's not always about money. Security in contract length, personal reasons, better/longer contract offer, more first team games, more play time, lack of opportunity at the previous Club, etc etc.
People always presume it's about the money, and yes it will have a bearing, but it's about the whole package fitting the player in question at the right time, and ticking all their boxes for what they want. They're human beings after all, with the same problems we all have. Reducing them to mere money chasers is to miss the point completely.

Indeed, as Jodie Broughton's Dad told me last year, Jodie wanted to stay at Salford not for more money but for a longer deal (at least a 4 year deal), he thought he'd earned that with his loyalty when we were in the mire. As I understand it, the club would only offer him a maximum 2 year deal as we were 'in transition' but Hudds offered him a 4 year deal, therefore he went. I think it's unlikely that he would end up at Hudds for less money than he was on at Salford just because Hudds were a play-off side but at the same time not necessarily more either.
