I assume so, to their knowledge. But who is compiling the list?
Quote: theredshed "It's easy for any coach to say sign me that player but it's surely not as easy as that.'"
That's what I'm getting at: people's definition of 'full control' differs.
On a recent BBC documentary Harry Redknapp, dubbed a 'wheeler dealer' by the press, said that he knows who is available and he knows his transfer budget, but he has nothing to do with the contractual discussions - neither the length of the contract or the amount of wages they get. If he agrees a deal with a player, an agent and a club, it's about the fee and effectively joining his squad. The deal can still break down after that and he isn't told why. He also doesn't know how much money his current players are on. (Assuming you believe he was being sincere.)

Put simply the coach will have a player budget and several options as to who he signs.

I think there has to be total transparancy Chico, I'm sure Players Agents contact Coaches directly about availability of players all the time. Assume a scenario where a coach knew a player was willing to come only to be told by the club he wasn't.
Also as I mentioned above the Coaches know who the out of contract players are anyway www.therugbyscout.com/

| Quote: Chico "Let's take a hypothetical scenarioplayer a[/i, [iplayer b[/i and [iplayer c[/i.
[iPlayer d[/i was approached by the negotiations team but they didn't get on with the player's agent, so he wasn't included on the short list. However, the coach loves [iplayer d[/i. He thinks [iplayer d[/i would be a perfect fit into his team. Yet the coach isn't given the option; the coach never even knew he was available.
[iPlayer e[/i was on the original short list but one of the club's executives knows the guy who represents [iplayer c[/i, thinks they can do a good deal, and wants him on the list - at the expense of [iplayer e[/i.
This isn't full control but I bet this happens at most clubs. Full control would be for the coach to go to the board and say 'I would like [iplayer d[/i here next season'.'"
X's that by about 12 other clubs negotiating with players agents at home & overseas. So
there may be about 11 other clubs reach the same conclusions, we will be low on the pecking order for any potential buys.
the move into the new stadium has always been about possible income streams & a higher perception of the club to get us up the pecking order for better players , whether they are youngsters home grown talent or overseas signings.
The make or break is whether the move WILL effect our status and how we are viewed .
That seems to be happening on some levels and our Chairman has pretty must staked the future of our club on this happening , there is no plan B.
Stevo will still hate us though .. some things will never change.
Simms seems to polarise opinion , people I talk to about him either believe he is:-
a) the Aussie spawn of the devil ,
b) really knowledgeable and an asset to the organisation.

| Just one instance of how people make assumptions,---- couple of weeks ago, chatting to some guy, he started of on one re S.S. when I asked why, he didnt really have an answer apart from" he wouldnt still be here & in a job if he wasnt married to John Wilkinsons sister"!!!!!!
When I informed him Mrs Simms was not J.W.'s sister he was visibly shocked re that information & said he had thought that for years, so how many other fans also have some kind of misconseption of S.S.
That particular week JW had quoted in the programme that Steve Simms was an asset to him in the club , so if he is good enough for JW thats fine by me.

| Sad that yet another thread has been derailed by peoples nieve dislike of Simms. I do wonder if there are friends of ex players/coaching staff intentionally feeding the paranoia of some of the posters on here.
AS Shirl says (and if there's anyone aprt from maybe KOTS with thier finger more on the pulse at Salford who is a meer fan I'd like to know) if Wilky firmly believes that Simms is an asset to the club and himself personally that is fine by me and should be for the rest of the posters on here. Are his detractors suggesting that Wilky intentionally keeps someone on his payroll who is a libaility?? I doubt any highly succesfull businessman would do that.

| SS has signed some good ones, he has signed some duffers, you will never know how good a director of football he is until we have somebody to compair him too, technically we had Dave Tarry many moons ago and his role coved what SS does so compaired to him he has done a good job, Sir John must like him, SS has a greater knowlege of rugby league both in oz and here than Sir John does so that is why he has appointed him and sticks by him.
Its the title i think comfuses people "Director" of football implys that he is at the top of the tree when infact he floats between coaches skivvy (" i need some new players, go find me a 2nd row?"icon_wink.gif, JW rugby league brain ( "we the playing staff want to sign mr Smith, he is a 2nd row, played for melborne, played for Australia, not very injury prone, has a tongan passport, got married 3 kids quiet family man, wants £90k a year for 3 years can we afford him?" and odd job man for the players ("hello steve my washing machine has packed in can you get me some advice on how i can fix it or get a man round to do it?"
If it was up to me I'd change his title to
"Officer of player welfare and recuritement"
he still keeps his important title of an "Officer" and everyone knows what he does or if he wants to keep his "director" title "Director of player welfare and recruitement", premumably he will have people who do his running around for him so they in that case could be his "officers" its all boxed off everyone knows what the score is
The next 3 years are big for this club, bigger than 2003 , we dont move on both on and off the field in this time we will be staring down the barrell imo, the signs are good for me we seem to be taking baby steps in the right directon (with the club enbracing technology, fan pubs, training days, community work) the club have been planning this leap into a new stadium for years, keep the fair keep the good stuff running dont stop it because with a bit of success on the field it will take off

| Would just like to add my views to this thread.
SS did, not saying always has had a certain amount of power over coaching and picking the team, when SM was in charge he certainly had some influance over what players played and when, have heard it in the precence of SS and certain players of which i cannot name so please dont ask.
Players have asked him out right when is he gonna get them in the team, and i have heard his responces he had influence over SM dont know about other coaches, but also know that a lot, and mean a lot of ex players goin back many years have said they never liked or trusted SS, and that he has to much say at our beloved club. And you would be supprissed at what players said that.
Ok im ready for my haters to come along and shoot me down now

| I started this thread in all good faith relating to the current plight and likely future of our club. Sadly, it has been completely derailed and has deteriorated into a Steve Simms free for all. I now wish I hadn't bothered goodnight

| for me the players in the past have let the what does SS do? and i hate the coach because of A B C effect far too much and imo play beneath themselves , their job is to play rugby league, once not to long ago they were given the honour of doing a job they love to do, it seems their is far too much worry about what goes on at the top of our club by the people who dont have / very little effect on procceedings.
Hopefully with the old guard gone and a squad full of youth and quality proffessionals who are focused on the job rather than what SS is doing on board with the new stadium on the horizon this club will only be going forward

Your right, it has turned in to a SS free for all.
So back on topic, I too belive that the move to the new stadium will be make or break for salford as a club, our fan base has to increase by several thousand almost imeadiately, but fear this season has damaged our club with fans not turning up in there hundreds, im one of those fans that have lost heart amongst others, and have only attended a handfull of games this season.
I belive our club is on the up now with new stadium and new coach, and will be getting my season ticket for next year, in the hope that we can become a great club once again

| Quote: Jim Jalfrezi "I know this may seem a bit "Doom and Gloom" .... but I wondered what people's opinions are regarding the club's immediate and long term future.
I was talking with CCNo1Fan on Sunday and whilst our opinions varied on certain matters, we seemed to agree on the followingThe move to Barton HAS to be an immediate success
If the move to Barton is to be a success, everyone involved with the club in whatever capacity will have to work together without any of the back biting and mudslinging that we have had on here of late.
The playing squad MUST be ultra competitive from the word go
An obvious requirement that should have been happening now, which we have only seen on half a dozen occasions this season.
The club MUST pull out all the stops to attract (and retain) new supporters to the new stadium
Agreed 100% and the fans should also do their bit as well by keeping their criticism's constructive and by also giving new fans reasons for them to return
The new coach MUST be given total control of the playing side, and given every ounce of support from both the Directors and fans alike
Agreed 100%.
The undercurrent of 'player power' within the club HAS to end Now
I would add that any player who criticizes the club on any social network site should not be made welcome at the club, either they are up front with the club/fans or they are out.
The coaching staff MUST instil into the players the ideology that playing for Salford is a privilege and that wearing the club shirt is an honour not just a 'means to an end'
I am certain that the new coach will carry this out 100% If all the playing staff put in half as much as the Chairman and Directors put in we would be ok.

| A very good post, I have said before now,the move to the new stadium is are last chance saloon.I have been to meetings
like a lot of other people,at the said meetings the club have said people will see the new stadium, from the bridge and say
we will have to go and see this.If this is what they still think, they are in the clouds,at the end of this season,we have
got to start shopping at Tesco and not the market. We have got to it the ground running,if not we will have less than now.And the council will have a white Elephant.

You did and there was a lot of very good points made on the first page.
There is no doubt that enthusiasm for the club is low at the moment. Simply relying on a new stadium to double our gates is not realistic. Today the performance was outstanding but im not convinced it will have a huge impact on out attendances. We need momentum to take into the new stadium. I cannot fault the close season recruitment in terms of money spent but unfortunately it was not wisely used. I believe we need to offer incentives for the final game at the Willows ie tickets for a tenner, plus a season ticket offer for next year. £100 adult season tickets and try and sell 5,000 plus, have it all over the advertiser and evening news.
