| I don't pay too much attention to these matters but someone did mention Bradford may be interested in Matty, and this was mentioned several weeks ago.
At Bradford,at the moment,is head coach Mick Potter who was at St Helens, his parent club when Matty went to Crusaders, then coached by Brian Noble, who it is rumoured may return to Bradford in some capacity, after their EGM on 23rd May - after we play/beat them on the 18th.
I think the current expression is - In PV and Longy we trust !

| Couple of really good youngsters chomping at the bit for his shirt, so I'm not bothered either way on this one...

| I am bothered !
He's a top class half back.
Definitely want to retain him ,but if we can't afford to then we just move on.

| We needed to be adding talent to the squad, not shedding it.
What Smith and Holdsworth lack right now is a dominant pack and a reliable dummy half. Holdsworth's all-round game isn't being helPed by being lumbered with the kicking.
Sneyd and the other kids need easing through.

| He's been playing like he's already gone. Wouldn't be any surprise at all if he signed elsewhere.
If so, give one of our youngsters a chance and spend some money on what we really need, i.e. some size and aggression in the pack.

We have offered a very good deal, would be highest paid at club but he is stalling in signing it.

| Think keeping Smith would be a statement from the club, to be honest I'd rather loose DJ than Smith, for me if we did get a decent barm storming prop or two and you'd see Smith mature into one of the best scrum halves in the country.
Let him go and although we have a youngster waiting in the wings it will another we'll get them ready and then you can taken them and get the full benefit.

I think Holdsworth has another year on his contract, Smith doesn't so really it's out of the clubs hands. I've said it for a few weeks now I doubt greatly Smith will be with us next season, for me he is one player who should show us some loyalty, why? well because we took the chance, for a few years he was farmed out by Saints on loan but nobody really took the chance to sign him, we did, offered him a club who he wouldn't have to play second fiddle to anyone and a platform to show his talent and maybe make his international case, but now HE'S stalling on an offer which I believe is more than generous for a guy who if we're honest has been very hit and miss in his time with us.
I'm in the train as though as many on here and on the terrace, if he stays great, if he goes oh well. Marc Sneyd is ready for my money, he's managed 5 tries, 48 goals & 2 drop goals this season in the 20's add to that 2 tries and 9 goals in the game against Whitehaven in the first team this season, he's got to be given his shot now.

Got to say, although he seemed to step up a level at the start of this season, I've never been a massive of fan of Smith's. His kicking is far from the best and his form has dropped off lately. To freshen things up, it may just be worth dropping Smith for a few weeks. Thus allwoing the coaching staff to have a good luck Sneyd, who has an all round better kicking game, and give Smith a kick up the back side. Smith will struggle to get a contract else where if he's not in the shop window.

| It's mid season at Salford it's almost a tradition ..
I'd like him to stay , but think like previous Halves he's used Salford as a shop window .
Until salford have the finance / fan base to spend more this will always be the case.
It's difficult to assess his ' form ' his pack had given Smith & Holdsworth room to play at the start of the season , now mid way through with knocks & injuries the pack are struggling to dominate and the fluency has gone + a bit a confidence , without a league win since 25th March.
Hard to shine when your pack isn't giving you a platform to get the plays going.
A dare say the fact that he still hasn't signed a contract will have diverted him mentally. but don't believe he would ' do a Myler' .
If the offer on the Table isn't to his ( Agents ) liking , he goes and we move on , it's not like we've not been able to find a replacement.
Robinson-Myler-Ratchford--Smith.
Luke Patten - urged Salford to pursue a homegrown recruitment drive , and deals like the ones offered to Owen & Fages points to a sea change in the attitute .
Salford pushed out the boat in 2010 for Patten , with money that would have been better spent this season marketing and attracting fans to the new Stadium .
I don't believe we can afford high profile Aus/NZ signing like Patten now. and 100K type senior wages have to be used wisely.
No disrepect to Smith . I'd rather we invested in a top quality prop that could protect his Half-Backs & give them room to play then give the youth a go.

| Like I've already said on another thread, I wouldn't break the bank to keep him. Yes he plays behind a beaten pack every week, but for me he doesn't offer enough on a consistent basis. His kicking game is poor and he doesn't really take on the line, he tends to play at first receiver and find Holdsworth on a wedge play. Also he doesn't have the support play of a top class halfback.
He try's his best and gives his all, which is all you can ask of anyone. I just think we wouldn't really miss him if he wasn't here, Sneyd possibly deserves a chance to see what he can do next season. If we spend money on improving the pack then most halfbacks will perform well behind a strong pack, that's where my main concerns lies.
We also need to get Danny Williams signed up asap. I know he's had a couple of injuries, but the guy is a class act when on form and can finish from anywhere. He also makes good meters coming out of yardage (more than our forwards most of the time).

| I wonder if Smith’s agent is holding out for much more in the knowledge that Patten’s departure is likely to free up some money in Salford’s budget? If he is I think the club has to be strong because for me you could not really say he’s improved that much or at all since he signed his previous contract with us. Any saving on Patten’s and others contracts should be allocated to bolstering the pack in my view.
If another club are prepared to pay Matty more then I’d thank him for his services and wish him all the very best.
Also if you Consider the club have just signed the highly rated french kid Theo Fages on a 5-year deal it suggests they see this lad as the next scrum-half of the team in the not too distant future.
