| Firstly being "full of yourself" - that would preclude any defence of anyone else surely. It would be beneath my lofty gaze.
Secondly "Littler is far from a great" - check the record books. It does not matter if you or I disagree, if a history of Salford RLFC was written in the future, he would appear in the list of 20 greatest players. The stats prove this. He is a great. FULL STOP
Thirdly, we all can say we would put in the effort. If my employers gave me the stick Littler has been getting from elements on this forum, I wouldn't. I do my basic professional job and no more. Littler has never done this but puts his body on the line week after week.
Short memories and bias getting in the way methinks.

I agree with you on this one, seems that if a player wasnt involved in a challege cup winning team or a league title win or represented their country they cant be great.
Littler scored the try which beat leigh in the grandfinal when as a club we were at a crossroads lose that game and we might be where they are today, he has scored may a crutial try in the past, yes we have all thrown our hands over our eyes over the years when he has done the "littler dummy" over the years but we've all jumped up and down when he crashed over to score
Swings and roundabouts i surpose, we need to move on thou unless their is nothing better around, im sure with SS and Mcrae's transfer market form if there is anyone they will find them.
Quote: Hillbilly_Red "Effort isn't everything. Put me in a Salford shirt next week and I'll put in as much effort as I physically can. I'd still be sh*t, though..'"
Can i give GT his 1st Crash ball please?

Playing a lot of matches doesn't make a player great! I'm not knocking Littler here, i'm in the tiny fan-club of his, but to say he's one of the 20 greatest Salford players of all time is pretty wide of the mark!!

From the fans
It cant be that far wide of the mark, he is a modern day great like Blakeley, Alker and Mark Lee

| Actually it does not matter what I or any of us think. In my youth I remember a player I rated highly called Smethurst.
We got rid.
Leigh won trophies through him. He was an international for them. Enuf sed.

I'm with you. I like Littler a lot, and always have.
He may well be one of the top 20 servants the club has had, but hopefully not in the best 20 players ever?!
Quote: The King Of Birchwood "IS STU DEFINETELY LEAVING? HEARD NOTHING FROM THE CLUB YET'"
Rumours on the Leigh board that he was lined up to sign for them next year, but then that it was all off as he has signed a new 12 month deal at The Willows.

Statistics could be used to prove anything. For example, a team that finishes the season with the greatest number of tackles could be said to be either a) a great defensive unit or b) so bad that they spent half of their time defending.
Statistics tell us that Ricky Ponting has scored more runs than Don Bradman. Yet even Ponting himself admits he'll never be greater than Bradman. I don't think many would argue with that, either.
Quote: Hillbilly_Red "Thirdly, we all can say we would put in the effort. If my employers gave me the stick Littler has been getting from elements on this forum, I wouldn't. I do my basic professional job and no more. Littler has never done this but puts his body on the line week after week.'"
Putting his body on the line week after week [iis[/i his job. That is what is expected of RL players at all levels across the world - you can't get by in the job by just going through the motions.
As for the stick he gets... Well, let's put it another way. If I made stupid mistakes week in, week out, didn't learn from them and stood there with a gormless look on my face not thinking I've done anything wrong when pulled up about them, I'd expect any employer to bin me pretty quickly.
Quote: Hillbilly_Red "I agree with you on this one, seems that if a player wasnt involved in a challege cup winning team or a league title win or represented their country they cant be great.'"
Once again, Bobby, you've shown a failure to grasp the basic argument being made. Since 1976 there's been players that we'll look back on as greats without them winning anything.
Quote: Hillbilly_Red "Littler scored the try which beat leigh in the grandfinal when as a club we were at a crossroads lose that game and we might be where they are today'"
And? That could've been any one of thirteen players on the pitch at the time who scored that try. Mark Robins scored the goal back in 1990 that kept Fergie in a job and catapulted United into 19 years and counting of success. Does anyone count Mark Robins as a United great? Do they balls.
As I said, Littler has been a great servant to the club. But a Salford great? Give over.

Can we name one who gave his whole career to the club including two relegations, Littler would die for the shirt and that is what we ask for as fans

Mark Robins was in the right place at the right time to score, he didnt do anything else to be warrented a great, if Utd had lost fergie would have been sacked but there still would have been a Manchester United.
We had lost against Leigh that day and im convinced we would have been where they are today, slipping into the 3rd division of Rugby league not a nice place to be.

Littler was in the right place at the right time to score. Nothing more.
