It may not be newsworthy to you, however the non payment of Council Tax is a Civil Offence and can be punished by imprisonment, which in turn does make it a newsworthy story and the fact he is a sportsman in the public eye. Council Tax bills generally increase if this happens and it's the people that are paying their Council Taxes that suffer. I've nothing against Salford by the way
