Quote: "Salford City Reds is today announcing a new Salford Rugby Hall of Fame initiative, providing deserved recognition to the elite group of players who achieved legendary status on the field at the club during their career. We will have a full news release on this shortly, however we can reveal that Malcolm Alker is the first player nominated for induction into the Hall of Fame under the new initiative – a player who gave long service, and was perhaps the toughest player ever to pull on the famous scarlet jersey.
A committee of four will have the final decision on inclusion for all new members of the Hall of Fame later in the season, and once yearly from then on.
Reds' Football Manager Paul Highton, a long time team-mate of Alker’s said, “Malcolm was an unequalled leader of men – he didn’t only talk the talk, he walked the walk as well, and demanded the same of you. The fiercest of competitors, an inspiring captain and completely and utterly fearless...
We'll be giving more details on how it works soon - we're taking it all very seriously though (we're finalising the strict criteria at the moment), as we feel this is a multi generational thing and we'd like it to be something people (players and fans) take as seriously as we are. And something that will live forever.
There are certain people from history who are 'no brainers' and they will not be forgotten. Some legendary older players will be automatically inducted without needing to be nominated - the nomination process will be for 'new' members of the Hall of Fame and they will need a majority yes from the committee to be inducted. We'll release more details soon, and full details over the coming months.
We'd like to have both a physical and online presence for the Hall of Fame and we're working through how to make that happen. Not in a position to announce anything along those lines yet though. We have high hopes that we're introducing something that will outlive us all here.'"

Now a Hall of Fame has been debated on here before and I think done right it could be a superb addition. How do you think it should be done? And what do you think of Alker being an inaugural inductee?

| Where are the people inducted going to have these details displayed?
Would maybe be an idea if the Doc gets his desired stake in the Stadium that the people inducted each have a large wall mounted picture and details of why they are there and their achievements dotted around the concourses and a smaller version in the fans bar. At the MM weekend at City's ground they had similar there and it is a brilliant way to brighten up large areas where fans mingle.

| Apart from the obvious stars of yesteryear, the great players from the Watkins era particularly ,I really would like someone to make a genuine effort to track down Ken Gill.
We normally hear that he became very disillusioned and wanted nothing more to do with the game but someone must know where he is now.
In my humble opinion,he was the best stand off we've had in my lifetime and helped make it all happen.
As for Malcolm Alker,I would have preferred someone other than him to be first inductee ,for the reasons previously raised on here, but its decided now so lets support it.

| Poor first inductee given individuals from yesteryear with far better credentials and reflecting periods of success.

| I must have missed something as I am not on Facebook. I cannot believe the two names mentioned will be the first two inductees. Please, please, please do the job chronologically and start with the players from different eras and slowly move forward. Also please make sure the recipients are worthy of the award. Steve Blakeley was a good player but there are so many more worthy of it. As for Malcolm Alker despite his longevity the two occasions he blotted his copybook(in USA & as assistant coach ) should prevent his inclusion. The Club is moving forward in a manner that few expected, please do not spoil it by some rash and questionable decisions.

| Have I imagined a Salford Hall of Fame already having been done featuring the expected greats like Risman, Lomas & Watkins?
King Of The Shed - haven't you got a framed print of it?

| Just out of interest who nominated these players and who are the four people making up the committee? For all I/ we know they could the four most fanatical members of the Malcolm Alker fan club. Personally I think a Hall of Fame should be strictly limited to those who have actually contributed success (Major Silverware) to the club rather than players who either averaged 40 tackles a game or was a decent goal kicker. Without being disrespectful I don't think you can attribute the word 'fame' to either of them.

| So,in conclusion ,if the good Doctor or his acolytes read this forum then you've already decided on Alker and so be it.
But,please now concentrate on genuine greats ,to start with , and they must come from the era when we were successful rather than recent fans favourites.
And find Ken Gill !

| Some people have very short memories. Malcolm Alker quite rightly deserves his place within the Salford Reds hall of fame and shouldn't be penalised against the likes of Watkins and Gill because he played in many substandard teams, filled with many substandard players.
A Salford legend who has more than earnt this accolade with his effort and level of consistent and excellent performances in a red shirt over a long period of time.

Perhaps, but lets not devalue what constitutes a real legend, either
