IF WIDNES DESERVE A PLACE IN SUPER LEAGUE.......THEN THE POPE IS JEWISH!:33469.jpg

One of the biggest let downs over recent years(other than the drivel on the pitch)is how we market and promote the club!!...there is always quite a biggish half decent effort pre season to get people to purchase season tickets, but even this is through the usual channels, namely the club website!Salford is a massive city with thousands of people, hundreds of schools/clubs etc to target within a 5 mile radius of the willows!!...so why do we struggle so much??..clearly the first answer is that biggish football club just down the road!...but we cannot keep using this as an excuse or we will get no where!l..like mentioned in several post, there are people living on tootal road/weaste lane etc that would even know there was a game taking place, its no good having the attitude of waiting till the club move to Barton to get new fans on board!!WE SHOULD BE DOING THIS NOW....we still have 7 home super league games left, plus hopefully some challenge cup ties, surely the club can invest a few quid(money saved on Bailey retiring for a start)on a big promtion drive for the remainder of the season!
So what if the club dont get rich quick off any ideas/promotions,but at least get people through the gates in decent numbers and half interested and no what we are all about! Now i'm no marketing/advertising guru, but cant remember the last time i saw a game advertised in a shop window, flyer bought home from the kids at school, bill board, radio advert etc???..Now the football season is coming to a close and the light evenings are here surely to god the club should be making a bigger effort!!....KIDS FOR A QUID.....KIDS FREE WITH A PAYING ADULT....FREE BEER TOKEN WITH ADULT ENTRANCE.....£5 QUID AN ADULT IN GROUPS OF 10 OR MORE...HAVE A LADIES GAME WHEN WOMEN GO FREE ...its not rocket science...come on this season so far has been a joke lets do something at least off the pitch to try turn things around!!!A few years back we had over 6000 home fans in against Swinton for a rail cup game on a cold evening !

I reckon Salford's fans are the friendliest i've come across and haven't got a bad word to say about them[/quote:inve33bl][/size:inve33bl] Love him or hate him, 163 consecutive appearances should make Stuart Littler a Salford legend in anyone's book :Others/NA.JPG

I think we need to re-introduce the Junior Devils (or whatever the kids club uesd to be called) and use it as a vehicle to get more kids involved in the club.

I believe that children are the future .....

They've tried/trying [sizeE V E R Y T H I N G[/size but the reality (that most have come to terms with) is that marketing a losing team at a ground like ours is flogging a dead horse.
On this subject though - I've been mightily impressed with the quality of video ads at the TC, and doing the social media rounds. The rock radio plugs seemed to attract a bit of praise too, though I haven't heard them myself. The new venture to bring the matches into local boozers is pretty innovative, no idea what return it'll provide but it's exposure.

This has got to be a big part of it though. Marketing isn't just promotion - it's the whole offering. With the new stadium facilities there will really be something to promote.

Oh yes, love a good marketing thread. Dont get me wrong im as p££$$d off as the next man. Actually sat with some Hudds mates at the game on Tues and it broke my heart look over at the away end, but blaming 'marketing' isnt the solution!!

Now i could be wrong but over the many long drawn out years ive been following Salford they have tried all of the suggested above and i thought it had been debated to death that the 6k at Swinton was all freebies, who buggered off cos it was too cold at half time and never returned. IIRC Golden Angels wasnt it?! It used to sicken me when people in my local takeaway had some of these tickets. Im all for us spreading the gospel and i can live with the need for some freebies but it put me in a real rage when i spend my hard cash (as do 100s of other loyal supporters) and 'fans' get in for free!!! - i know thats what us fans are supposed to do & im comfy with it most of the time but a strongly worded letter went off to the club that day.

Wardley Red i feel your pain pal (i really do!) and know your frustration but do rest assured the club does some good stuff. Like has been said above the Rock Radio promos are great. I know the station isnt everyones cup of tea (i more of a Smooth man myself icon_wink.gif ) but we obviously have a good thing going there and its just good to hear ppl talk about the Reds live on commercial radio. New website just lauched and the Pub scheme thats been talked about here are good efforts. If anything i get too much stuff in my inbox email wise, but i think the text reminders we seem to get this year are a good touch.

This kind of stuff is good too - www.reds.co.uk/trybeforeyoubuy

Ive worked in sales & marketing for over 15 years and as im a bit of a sad geek take an interest in what we do and how it compares to other sports clubs. What we do isnt world beating by no stretch of the imagination but we seem to be moving in the right direction at the moment. Really think we just need to hold our nerve and keep going. I for one would rather have a crowd of 4000 paying full whack that a crowd of 6k with 4ooo paying nowt and never coming back.

No gimmicks, just drop the ticket price to £10 and you'll get plenty of people back. Get some decent beer on too - it's not as if Greater Manchester area has a lack of brewers so why are we forced to drink cooking lager if we want a beer to go with the games?

To be fair to the club on this they have tried quite a few different things but seem to have pretty much given up on attracting crowds to the willows and are pinning all hopes on the new stadium. One criticism I would have is that they come up with some pretty good ideas, but fail to let people know about them. For example if you've not got the internet how are you going to know about the 'try before you buy' offer? Maybe this is where the fans should come in and send the link onto friends/family etc.

Or will we just half our gate income in an instant? Whilst I agree that RL in general is heading the way of football in terms of pricing people out, there's plenty of examples in the past of free tickets being on offer at Salford and people not taking them - we need to create a desire for people to want to come rather than just slash the price.

this will not be the end, or even the beginning of the end. It is merely the end of the beginning [img:1mcv36at]http://homepage.eircom.net/~bray/em/oguinn.gif[/img:1mcv36at] [img:1mcv36at]http://homepage.eircom.net/~bray/em/msperv-l.gif[/img:1mcv36at]:3596.jpg

Magic icon_biggrin.gif I can just see it now, bearded men in high heels with squeaky voices queueing all the way down Weaste Lane!

Or turning this on it's head, there have been some games this season where I've thought we were watching a ladies game, especially in defence!

A lot of the ideas are really good in isolation, but don't seem to be part of any sustained overall plan. That said, no amount of marketing is going to attract significant numbers to watch us get beat at The Willows.

The one tool not tried at Salford is success, that is the only tool required to bring in the crowds, maybe maybe not in our case.

Data is king in these days. I fancy there's a big stonking database of interested/semi-interested potential customers to pursue.

You are spot on with that....you can have all the marketing you want and shiney new stadiums, but unless you have the right product on the field performing and competing you'll never get full houses week in week out.
People want to see a winning team thats why they pay their gate money(or not in some cases).
