Quote: John Gilbert Reds "I don't think Wakefield can commit to anything further than a one year deal for a player earning what I suspect Tim Smith will be. With promotion and relegation taking effect, there are dangers in over committing when your fate for the future years isn't secured.
As previously said, huge shame it didn't work for Tim at Salford. I was excited by his signing, but he just never settled. It was great to see him back to his best towards the back end of last season with Wakefield.'"
They could commit to a contract that covers Super League only though, so if the club is relegated a new contract has to be negotiated or the player can move on. That's how it used to work.
I can understand players not wanting to commit long term to a club they feel might be involved in the relegation battle though. Unfortunately, there's the danger of it becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy as the club has to exist from year to year and finds it harder to commit to any long term plans.
P&R between a full time competition and a largely part time one will inevitably throw up problems like this.
