sorry for such a waste of a thread but the baby has been thrashing about on the laptop and has somehow made the web search bar at the top of the screen become a 'drop down' thing
it automatically hides if the cursor is not over it!
Hold the mouse over the bar at the top of the screen and click on the middle button in the top right of the screen between minimize and close. Should be sorted if that makes any sense whatsoever....

I think she must have pressed F11. Had enough pratice of finding out when our cats were kittens and they used to like to sit on top of my laptop while I was on it.
