You've just described Littleborough RU matey.
The professional RU players have certainly improved a great deal in terms of athletic prowess and I'd suggest that there may well be some decent wingers who could probably convert to League. As for all the other positions I really can't see any union player being able to make the transition. There are just too many subtleties that you can't see from the terraces that need to be mastered. This takes many years to do. For example Kevin Penny. Blistering pace, fairly decent hands and not scared to throw his body at the opposition yet time and time again he gets found out by the most average of teams purely because of the lack of knowledge and subtle skill built up over many years.
As for Gavin Henson. No bloody chance. He might put his shoulder into attacking players in Union but the dynamic attacking lines and forever changing angles of League would flumux him. Same applies to his passing. Too many variations and subltleties never mind the guile that the great RL players posess.
I've spoken at length with my Union Buddies about this very subject and the conclusion we came to is that although very loosely based on the same origin, the comparison of Union and League is about as pointless as comparing snooker and billiards. yeah they may look similar to the untrained eye but couldn't be more different. The same applies by and large to the players.
