74 million players a month, 125 million in july. Big money tournament, celebrities who play it, primark and other supermarkets stocking various clothing lines, its more than just a fad. And the NFL have jumped on the bandwagon to get more exposure.
If the rfl had a fat sack of money available, they'd get a load of exposure if they tried to get involved with this, say just before the start of the new super league season. It'll never happen but this is the sort of thing they need to be trying to do, changing their marketing, thinking outside the box.
Try and make rugby league cool for the kids. They're the customers of the future.

Tamagotchi anyone? 80 million units sold.........
or how about one of these.......
.....killed Vinyl (or at least buried it for 30 years)
It's a fad and will be replaced by another fad......marketing on its popularity is great, but it's a short term high expense method for a qUick return......the NFL existed when the walkman came and went and it will be the same with this

| Please keep RL away from anything associated with flossing, dabbing or any other weird affliction this game encourages. Children spend far too much time in front of screens, not something I’d like to see rl encourage.

Well said. Let’s encourage them to gamble instead by having Ladbrokes sponsor the challenge cup

As well as the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup it’s also the Betfred Super League. I do agree this is adding to the Nations problem gamblers, but it needs to be restricted by the government, that’s their job to create laws, not through the RFL turning down sponsorship.

| Whatever you think of video games, the reality is that it's a large part of the lives of a lot of young people.
Major football and NFL clubs aren't investing heavily in e-sports (and top e-sports players aren't earning more than some Premier League footballers) because its a fad. They're doing it because it's a way to connect with a notoriously hard to reach audience.
You can complain about "kids on their PlayStations / phones all day long" but if that is the way the wind is blowing, it's not good news for the courier of this sport if it doesn't / can't respond to that trend.

| At the risk of taking the thread in a different direction, has the emergence of smart phones and next gen consoles lead to the dwindling participation at grass roots level of not only rugby league but sunday league football?

Not convinced. These things exist all over the world.

Did the emergence of Space Invaders, ZX81's, Atari Consoles and Nintendo Gameboys lead to the same?
This is the world we live in - the poster who suggests embracing and exploiting technology for the benefit of the game is quite correct; trying to resist it is no more than tilting at windmills, and reinforces the perception of RL as an anachronistic dinosaur pastime from a bygone era.
