| Given the very ordinary season the Leeds Rhinos have had this year along with their failure to win when it really counts, it beggars belief that there's 7 of their players selected in the England squad of 24.

Looking at those that have been included who do you think should not be in the squad:
Hall - definitely should be
Watkins - without a doubt
Briscoe - another shoe in
Hardaker - after Tomkins the best english FB in SL
Sinfield - he is the captain so has to be in
Ablett - Westwood apart as good as any second row in SL
Burrow - I would not have included him
Burrow apart every other player is in on merit - do you disagree and if so which players would you have picked instead?

Hall - has to be selected despite his ordinary season.
Watkins - no other viable options but I'm still not keen. He's a show pony who cannot even defend well at SL level. Such a shame that Jack Reed is injured.
Briscoe - way behind Charnley and Hall. Seems a waste of a squad place on another winger.
Hardaker - Ratchford is better.
Sinfield - just completed his worst and most ineffective season ever. Should have retired from international RL after the disastrous 2008 World Cup along with Rob Burrow. I'd have gone for Widdop at 6 and Matty Smith at 7.
Ablett - I can see what he offers at SL level but what has this niggly lump got to offer at international level? Seriously? Is it his SL-level utility value? No thanks. Waste of squad place.
Burrow - see above. Duck, duck, quack, quack, dive, dive, crab across field, can't execute a pass, and when he does it's usually forward, neither a scrum half or a hooker.

| for once i cant believe it but i agree with william eve on his assesment of the rhinos in the squad, the only one worth his place to me is ryan hall, dont get all the cudjoe knockers for me watkins is much more of a worry to me, his defence is shocking at SL level nevermind international level, not overly convinced with his attack either.

So the only alternative you have offered not in the squad is Ratchford for Hardaker - suggests a lack of credible alternatives. They are in on merit as the best available players - sad state of affairs.

| So what if Watkins is unfit for the World Cup?
Some time to go but he was crocked in the Wigan game and had a stinker apart from that. Great with ball in hand but a defensive nightmare.
Charnley & Goulding would have been a better centre/wing.
Cudjoe can play left side and should go there with Hall.
O'Loughlin may not make it so Ferres is on the plane.
Widdop can't be fully fit for International intensity so Matty Smith on standby.
Ratchford should be on standby for utility value. Good at fb, centre & half back.

| Does no one else think that some of Watkins defensive frailties are exaggerated by a Leeds tactic to rush up out wide?

| No they are exaggerated on rlfans.com, he's no where near the liability in defence that is made out in here

They're exaggerated by the fact that people see Leeds conceding breaks in their right centre channel and don't realise that it's where Sinfield and McGuire defend rather than Watkins.
Watkins has defended fourth man in for most of the season, regularly making 20+ tackles per game. This idea that he's somehow a defensive liability is fallacy.

Not sure about that.
Ablett must have been decked of half the league during the last few seasons. There is a couple in that Aussie squad that would knock the be-Jesus out of him if he tried his shenanigans.
Hock, Westwood and Micky Mac to name a few will ensure that the "niggle" is more like an International against the Ockers deserves.

| We do need 'niggle' to get at the Antipodeans but class wins you International games and World Cups. On another point, only Ablett for me wouldn't have been in from Leeds. The others deserve their jerseys.

He does have that Ben Westwood thing of having a head like a breeze block though, of the punches he's taking I can't really remember anyone really hurting him, he's just carried on with the match.
As for Watkins' defence, a big part of it is how Leeds line-up trying to 'hide' 3 halves with Burrow playing hooker. With England most likely to start with Roby (or McIlorum) at hooker then a more natural centre position in defence might see an improvement.
Like someone mentioned above, he does get through quite a lot of tackling so it's not so much that he can't tackle, more his positioning which costs him. If however, he can as I mentioned above, defend in a more natural centre position he could be ok. I remember him having a good game defensively against Manly in the 2012 WCC up against Matai.

| I remember Watkins conceded a try to Atkins in last years Grand Final that was just awful but for the most part he looks a competent defender, somewhere firmly in between the excellent and terrible we have seen mentioned on this thread. He is certainly not as good as Cudjoe or Goulding defensively but I think we are on a hiding to nothing out wide against Aus anyway, and he does have a bit of spark in attack that we will need if we are to have a chance against them so he would get my vote with Cudjoe. We aren't exactly blessed with choices for centre in the squad so they pretty much pick themselves.
