I must be on a different planet, because the attitudes from the likes of White and Ashton made that game. I texted a mate while watching "Ashton's a d/head, but it's great entertainment".

This was a really entertaining game. I was surprised at how physical the Fijians were, with their forwards hitting hard all game. They have plenty of pace in the outside backs too.

Fiji will definitely have to become more disciplined if it wants to compete with Australia. The coach had better work on that.

The other problem is that Fiji has a lot of talented players, but not in the halves.

I think a place has to be found for Darryl Millard (assuming that he is not injured) either as centre (with Wes Naiqama moving to no. 6) or as No 6 himself.

I started watching the game expecting to support Fiji, but within about 2 minutes I was supporting Ireland.

I love the physical side of the game but Fiji were dirty throughout and took it too far with cheap shots, elbows, hair pulling etc. etc.

"Arguably the best Rugby League side certainly in the last 40 years!" Phil Clarke.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_13707.jpg

They were exactly the same in the Police World Cup Final at Headingley. The referee that day was having none of it and, if I remember correctly, played 30 minutes with 12 men due to 3 sin-binnings.

Enjoyed the game, impressed with fiji, very aggressive, maybe abit over the top at times but rattled Ireland...fiji could pose a few problems for england

Same for me. I was expecting to cheer on Fiji but it soon became apparent that Ireland were the plucky one’s and so I ended up supporting them. Fiji were good but I don’t think we can judge too much from that performance as Ireland, while they worked really hard were lacking creativity going forward

The Fijians are definitely impressive athletes though and will trouble even the best defences through sheer athleticism

They definitely need to cut out the cheap stuff though as a better outfit than Ireland would have punished them when they were being walked downfield on the back of penalties (and on that note, not sure why the referee is getting the blame for Fiji’s lack of discipline but there you go)

Quote: roopy "Brett White is a well known grub and sledger.
He put a high shot on Korbin Sims early in the game and would have had a lot to say about it, as is his way.
The Sims brothers are all known as guys who will go toe to toe in a forward battle, and as usual White bit off more than he could chew.
To be honest, White and the Sims brothers are all pretty similar players - but it was three on one in this game.'"

Perspectives are an interesting thing. From reading English forums you would think Fiji were grubs who played dirty without reason. But look down under and most rugby league fans felt that Ireland were getting away with a lot of off the ball nonsense and Fiji were right sort them out with some big but mainly legal hits.

Watching the game myself I'm not sure what people are against? I understand that taken collectively you might say Fiji went over the top, but the fact of the matter is that if you take their bruising tackles individually there was nothing wrong with 99% of them.

It also seemed to me that Ireland were happy to make an equal amount of high shots and get involved with a bit of niggle(elbowing people in the head after a try, clotheslines, late hits, etc)

From where I'm sat Fiji are catching all the flak because they physically dominated the opposition to a ridiculous extent. Nothing to do with being noticeably more dirty, everything to do with being bigger, faster, stronger and more explosive than their opponents.

And for anyone licking their lips at the possibility of a Sims-Burgess showdown. The Sims Brothers seem up to it and hammered the Rabbitohs last time round.

Did you also start supporting Ausrtralia a few minutes into the England game? After all the English boys were flying in with high shots, niggling in the tackle, elbowing people in the face.

Fiji were no dirtier than England were against Australia. Everything that Fiji did you can find examples of England players doing. The only difference is Fiji emasculated Ireland whereas England were unable to do the same to Australia.

Fiji were so physically superior to Ireland that - even though Ireland were giving plenty back in the illegality stakes - viewers saw Ireland as the victim of bullying and felt sorry for them icon_lol.gif

Thought Ireland could have scored more with all the ball and field position they had but they seemed clueless in the backs. Also, is the pitch at Spotland quite narrow because it seemed that both backlines ran out of space to pass quite quickly?

Groome and Noilea did a much better job than I thought they would. Groome was a decent halfback in under 20s but has never done anything in the seniors and basically plays park footy, and Noilea is a domestic Fijian player.

If I were changing anything i'd move Wes Naiqama to fullback and Kev Naiqama to 5/8. Kev did the last pass for 2 of Uate's tries and he has been doing quality playmaking from fullback for the last few seasons.

Thoroughly enjoyed Spotland last night. Thought Fiji were uncompromising and ruthless, but didn't cross the line any more than you see in any good hard intense game with a bit of fire. If SL games were all of that intensity it wouldn't matter what format the competition is. Give me a bit of mongrel and a few borderline characters any day.

Ireland stood up well to the Fijian onslaught but seemed to back off towards the end, some of their runners didn't seem all that keen to hit the white wall any more!

This WC is shaping up nicely.

Well, you would have never thought, Australian RL fans mainly going for the team with Australian based players in and British fans going for the side with mainly British based players, whatever next!

you seemed to be watching a different game to me as i wouldn't have that % so high and that was the problem really

Quote: ChrisGS "

pretty sure i saw a few of those from the fijians too

Quote: ChrisGS "

If they were all those things in such greater quantities they wouldn't have needed to get into all that.
You failed to notice that when they did lose their head, they actually let Ireland into the game and they scored. After half time Fiji cooled off and outplayed Ireland while still dominating them in the middle

We all watch/play the game because we love the physical aspect, It was great to see the physicality on display but the point is to win RL matches at the highest level you need more than brute force.
