Well all of them apart from Bates made their debut before this season.

Quote: Bull Mania "Currently in our squad who has played this year

Congratulations. How do it compare to a side of:

Wellens
Makinson Percival Jones Swift
Wheeler Lomax
Richards Roby Thompson
Wilkin Greenwood
Charnock

Which would be my pick for a saints based homegrown team right now? Without wanting to turn this into a ---- measuring contest, saints have 19 home grown listed in their first team squad, who had already made their debut at the beginning of the year - the above is just the pick of them + those playing elsewhere around the world (were a little light on forwards looking at the bigger picture)

I'm sure the same could be done for Wigan and Leeds as well. Saints are 3rd in a three horse race at the moment, youth development wise, but at least were in the race.

Indeed.
At Leeds it would be:
1. Jones-Bishop (or Hardaker if he counts?)
2. Handley (or Jones-Bishop)
3. Watkins
4. Ablett
5. Hall
6. Sinfield
7. McGuire
8. Singleton
9. Burrow
10. Bailey
11. Jones-Buchanan
12. Ward
13. Sutcliffe

We've improved as a sport with regard to academies, and clubs are at least producing players compared to buying imports. But my issue is over the quality of many of these lads and the quality of the academies they are coming through. I'm not sure there is too much "value" being added to a lot of lads in many academies.

Classified as homegrown? He was eligible for the u21s for the first 3 years he was at saints, and thus qualifies as homegrown.

If you really don't like it swap Wilkin out for walker and then it's sorted icon_biggrin.gif

That Leeds team is really good, but don't see how Hardaker could be a possibility?

Fair to say some clubs are better at retaining their grown grown player than others but that doesnt necessarily mean other clubs are poor at developing them as sky would let us believe.
For EG we have brought the following players through but for one reason or another not been able to keep them

Mark Flanagan
John Batemanan
Jamie Peaccok
Chris Bridge
Ryan Atkins
Joe Wardle
Larne Patrick
Craig Kopczak
Brett Ferre
Leon Pryce
Elliott Whitehead
Jamie Langley
Jason Crookes
Paul Sykes
Richard Moore
along with Sam Goerge and Tom Burgess

Thats up there if not better than any club in SL but dont be fooled as its only Wigan Saint and Leeds that develop youngsters!

Involving players from other clubs is a whole other story. Wigan Leeds and saints have plenty dotted around the leagues as well. For saints, we have graham (international), eastmond (international) and smith(double winner and lance Todd winner ... Not that I'm bitter) to go along with more players who make up super league sides (like Jamie Ellis, who played today) - retention is one thing, sure, but you named 17 players who made the cut in how many years? There are 22/37 in saints squad this year, there were 11/17 who beat Leeds at LP - as I say, saints are still a way behind Leeds and Wigan (which is why our 1-17 home grown is a lot younger) but were producing more every year now - No one is saying saints Leeds and Wigan are the [ionly[/i teams who produce youngsters. Were in a position where most teams can put 18-25 of there squad as youngsters they have developed. But it's about how many of them are actually likely to feature and become regulars?

Sorry for delaying the entire thread. My original post was regarding a comment made on SL back chat that said only Leeds, Saints, Wigan seem to concentrate on youth. My point was that this isnt true. Many teams develop youth players to an excellent standard and put a lot of hard work in to youth development. Not just Saints, Leeds and Wigan (they are the best at it) I would just like to see other clubs getting the credit they deserve for developing the Burgess brothers, Bateman, Clark Etc

As you were icon_smile.gif
