Quote: dids858 "Mostly correct expect that Sky ditched NRL not that NRL took the golden carrot of Setanta.'"

I'm not totally sure Sky ditched it. I think it was more they didn't think it was worth getting in a bidding battle with Setanta.

pretty peeved about this. i know they've had a lot on their plate with the membership drive and the commission talks, but surely they could have got their finger out a few months ago and sorted this.

last resort give it to sky or a FTA channel like 3, 4 or 5 for free. its not as if they show anything better at that time of the morning, at the very least it would be good exposure!

The irony of all this is; it would be the best value sports package any network could show.

I emailed the NRl a few days ago asking about coverage in the UK. They have responded this morning with a Media release.

MEDIA RELEASE

Telstra BigPond today announced it will provide free live streaming of Round 1 Premiership matches into the United Kingdom, Canada, USA, South Africa, South America and Europe to promote its ongoing international subscription service.

Following on from the most exciting build-up to an NRL season in memory, fans in those markets will be able to view all eight Telstra Premiership matches for free live on NRL.com via bigpondvideo.com/nrlliveuk.

Fans in Italy will be able to access live streaming to all matches except the Monday night clash between Wests Tigers and Manly, while fans in the USA will be able to access every match except the clash between the Bulldogs and Knights.

From Round 2, a live pay-per-view internet service of Telstra Premiership matches will available via omnisporttv for a fee of $US 5.95 per match.

All international supporters will also be able to subscribe to video streaming of Telstra Premiership matches on 24-hour-delay through the Aussie Sport TV subscription service (www.aussiesport.tv) for a fee of $US1.95 for a four-day pass and $US 59.95 for 12 months.

The NRL has today confirmed international broadcast deals for the 2010 season with Skysport in New Zealand (www.skysport.co.nz), the Australian Network (www.australianetwork.com) in the Asia Pacific region, EMTV in Papua New Guinea, Orbit Showtime Network (www.orbitshowtime.com) in the Middle East and Dahlia TV (www.dahliatv.it) in Italy.

The NRL is continuing to negotiate with broadcasters in other parts of the world.

“The Telstra Premiership has a huge support base internationally and we wanted to ensure those fans had an opportunity to watch the opening round of NRL matches live,” NRL Chief Operating Officer, Mr Graham Annesley, said today.

“There remains strong interest from international broadcasters to televise NRL matches this year and we will continue to work with them to try and service our overseas fans.”

International fans can continue to access radio broadcasts at no charge through NRL.com.

Working for me - you need to navigate around the NRL section a little, click on "League TV" then "NRL Live".

Good job as some of the less legitimate options didn't appear to be working this morning!

Really sorry to rub it in, but at the moment in the Middle East we have the two major sports channels (Orbit Showtime 1 & 2) showing live Rugby League at the same time. Then tonight we have the Wigan-Hull game which is getting more advertising than I ever saw back in the UK.

The apathy of RL fans in the UK, and their lack of desire to kick up a fuss with their TV providers is not helping the cause.

We've seen increased coverage in the UK newspapers pre-season, no doubt owing to the (sometimes vitriolic) emails that a number of messageboard users organised last season. Can we not try the same with Sky or the BBC...? I know the latter is a though nut to crack due to certain internal 'influences'...

Anyway I'll let you know how the NRL games go, looks like a 52,000 capacity for the broncos tonight!
