It's been noticed near our office in Manchester by one of my colleagues who came in to ask me who Tom Briscoe is. This kind of publicity is important for the game - I don't think some RL fans realise how little awareness there is of the game outside of the traditional towns. After the colleague asked about Tom Briscoe I asked the two other male colleagues sat near me if they could name a Rugby League player and neither could - one recalled that someone was on Soccer AM last year but that was as good as it got. One could name 4 rugby union players, but I'm not sure if they all still play.

I think more of our top players need media coaching. Most of them seem to favour the "Erm... you know...erm" approach to answering interview questions, usually in a heavy Yorkshire or Lancashire accent. I'm not suggesting that players should be ashamed of their roots, but a bit of an attempt to enunciate when there's a microphone under your nose will help to dispel the notion that it's only for working class Northerners.

Nothing wringing with having an accent. But I agree that players should be more eloquent speakers. You only have to look at Barrie Mac as a great example of someone is speaks clearly but retains his accent.

Baz and Tez both retain their accents, but manage not to 'erm' and 'you know' all the time. Clarkey as well.

Back on thread, and I watched the Extraordinary video last night, and bloody hell, the RFL have made a great, professional looking promo!! It's had 30,000 views on the un-named video sharing website, let's keep spreading the word, and get these players into the national conscience.

Phase 2 of 'Operation Extraordinary' - get Big Eorl on Strictly, Stomkins in the next series of Celeb BB and Ryan Hall Dancing on Ice; I gather they're all quite popular examples of modern televisual entertainment? You could also take a punt at getting Gareth Hock into dictionary corner on Countdown, but that's a bit of a longshot.

Great that we are finally promoting our players aswell as our sport.

As i said when the BT RU deal was announced, the RFL should be seeing if we could grab some of that screen time Sky Sports will now have, use it to build up the profile of our players, give a production company huge access, use some clever ideas and get the names and faces and personalities of our players out there.
Even the ones who are a bit ugly and not the most popular will raise recognition of the game, for every golden boy we need a pantomime villain. This is one of the few things that show the individuality and humanity (even through the 'heroes' thing) of the game, rather than the big, tough, meathead/robot stereotype we seem to fall in to too often.
