Quote: Starbug "That decision is usually made towards the end of a set depending on field position, obviously if you are still in your own half then it is less likely, and if you are leading then it is more likely you will reduce the risk involved in giving the opposition an ' open play ' option

But if you are losing, especially by more than 1 score then every set should start with the intention to score on that play, it really is that simple'"

I still wouldn't. Not until its getting to the point getting towards less than two minutes per needed try. I.e. possession starting in our own 10, and we're running some simple plays to set up a kick. Now, if we make a break part way through that set then things might change. But it's typically going to be better to set up a kick and play field position, or a contested kick.

Warrington have now beaten the champion 'best side in the league' four times this season. Can't argue with the fact we deserve to be in the Final.

You'd better hope that Wigan beat Leeds, as you seemed to be running scared from the Rhinos by picking the team that finished top, instead of the third placed team. icon_surprised.gifops:

Huddersfield aren't as good as Leeds. That's why Warrington picked them.

When will people realise that league position is irrelevant under this current format.

There must have been hundreds of coaches who have derided their side for trying to score on every set rather than doing what they should have been doing by working hard to earn the field position to put themselves in a position to score.

If you have an U11 mentality then yeah, you'll be able to score with every play, even if you're collecting the ball in your own in-goal. But if you're playing in a Grand Final eliminator against a side who've beaten you three times already and you are 8 points behind you clearly don't play the game with your childish mentality.

The priority from the Giants when Clarke made that comment would have been to do absolutely everything to make sure they didn't concede again. So that's no stupid pens conceded, no stupid offloads, no forced passes that end up spilled or intercepted, no risky kicks to try and create a break which means Warrington would be starting their set on the halfway line.

I think Clarke was right. I think his point was valid at that time that while they definitely wanted points on the board, there's no point pushing too hard for those points and putting yourself at a greater risk of conceding and effectively killing the game.

My money is on Warrington one of the 2 best teams in the comp this season and just beaten the other best team.
They will have learned a bit from the loss in the Final last season so I,m expecting them to come up with the goods on the second attempt.

I'm supprised no one has jumped on the best commetary of the evening which was;

Phil Clarke; "Maybe it's not that the older players are more experienced than the younger ones, it's just that they have played in more games!"

Shaun McRae "That's called experience Phil" I wet myself laughing at that.

As a neutral, would have loved to have seen Huddersfield vs Wire in the Grand Final then there would have definately have been a new name on the trophy, but think it could be Warrington's year this year, however Leeds have proved time after time, that they cannot be written off, regardless of their final standing. Just hope tonights game and the final are both crackers.

I would have loved to see Huddersfield and their 500 fans in the grand final
however it wasn't to be, so I wish warrington good luck next week against leeds or wigan,
despite mr silverwoods blindness to warrington's discrepancies they deserved their win and no complaints from me, we just missed out last night, but we are slowly building and if you don't reach the summit first time, you come back down and start again icon_smile.gif

This isn't tag rugby. Your mentality is stupid. How much rugby at this level do you watch?

When theres so long left, you have to build pressure and territory. With pressure and territory, normally comes the points. In a grand final eliminator this is something which can take half a dozen sets of completing, good kicking and good chase with you starting the 1st tackle gradually further up the field each set. Normally penalties and mistakes can speed up the issue but in a grand final semi the standard is normally higher and you have to work damn hard for position, and then build pressure with drop outs when you get it.

Brough's option was f*cking dumb at that stage in the game, bottom line. He sacrificed a good 40 yards of field position and warrington scored from the resultant field position. He did it last week v hull when hudds were 30 up and phil clarke actually commented that it's not normally an option you would see in the playoffs unless a last resort.

Brough's option was a low percentage play. The chances are you will lose alot of field position which can take sets and sets to recover and warrington made them pay.

I'm not completly sure what he was getting at but the point stevo made was simplistic. Just because a player is old or has played alot of games doesn't mean his is always more experienced. It depends how you quantify it.

Hypothetical example, zak hardaker is young and hasn't played many games yet he's played in 2 grand finals. You could get a 30 year old played hundreds of games but has no experience in a grand final. Who is more experienced on the occasion?
