Finishing uni in June so off out to Australia for a year with a working visa and to watch a few Ashes tests. Probably go to the England v Australia group game, the World Cup final and the NRL Grand Final too if it's not too hard to get a ticket.

WEST COAST PIRATES NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg

Hope to see some of you visit Perth. Great city, lovely beaches and nib stadium is a great compact rugby league stadium. You can even stand on a terrace (shed end). Seats in east stand all give a great view and you get the panaramic city skyline as a backdrop from that stand.

Me I'll be catching opener in Melbourne, back to Perth for my home game, Brisbane for a week to catch semi and final.

For those coming to Perth great things to do:
Rottnest island for a selfie with a quokka (ferry from. City, freo or hillarys)
Caversham wildlife park to feed the kangaroos and cuddle a koala (20min drive)
Little creatures brewery in freo (train or ferry from city, markets on a weekend worth a visit)
Homestead brewery in swan valley and do some wine tasting at vineyards (30min drive)
Cottesloe beach for swim (15min drive)
Clancy fish pub in city beach for a chilled out lunch and beers overlooking Indian Ocean (15min drive)
Sorrento quay, great swimming area and restaurants and beach. 3 sheets for food and breakwater for beers and watch the sunset (30min drive)
If staying a bit longer head down to Margaret river region, great vineyards, breweries and lovely area to stay. Go via Busselton and go on jetty to underwater observatory (3 hour drive)

Cheapest car hire place is Bayswater car hire $25 a day. Perth is easy to drive around and getting a car is a good idea as you can head out to the valley and down south if staying a few days. Public transport is also pretty good though if staying in city and just going to main places like freo.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't seen that, will look again. Do you have a link to that breakdown? I can only see it on Wiki. If it goes to form, perhaps give Melbourne part two a miss. Still, the difficulty is that it is pretty difficult to book travel and accommodation for England's KO stage matches until after 27 October 2017.

There's a little bit on the RLWC site, but wasn;t easy to find
The RLIF has approved that if Australia qualifies for a Quarter Final, it will play in Darwin. If NZ qualifies for a Quarter Final, it will play in Wellington.
If Australia and NZ were to play each other in a Quarter Final or Semi-Final, whoever finishes higher in the pool stage will get the home advantage.
If Australia and NZ make the Semi-Finals they will play in Brisbane and Auckland respectively.
The full Quarter Final fixture will be finalised at the conclusion of the pool stage, taking in to consideration hosting requirements.

Basically, it looks like even if England do beat Australia, they'll still be playing at Melbourne in the QF.

Thanks DGM!
For once - common sense prevailing here. I remember the AFC Asian Cup hosted in Australia in 2015 was a nightmare - The Socceroos were forced to play a semi-final in Newcastle when they had thousands dying to buy a ticket for the match in Sydney.

I suppose Melbourne isn't that bad icon_smile.gif

I think the Melbourne-Auckland-Brisbane (QF-SF-F) plan is a pretty good one as you're guaranteed to see all of the top 3 teams at least once and visit both countries. It all really hinges on the Eng v Aus Group game.

If England win, they'll go to Melbourne automatically, win that and I think they'll go to Brisbane for the Semi and likely win that, whilst NZ take on Aus in Auckland. Eng vs Aus/NZ final.

If England lose, they're still going to Melbourne, win that then they'll go to Auckland and likely play NZ. Win that and it's Brisbane for the final vs Aus.

These are the tickets we've got:

For Melbourne the tickets are really reasonable. We've got category A's, block 74 row C, for $51 (£32ish).

Auckland we've got category A's again for block 40, row A, for $80 (£50ish).

Brisbane for the final, we're behind the sticks, block 332, Cat B, $82 (£51ish).

I think they go on general release soon, so we wanted to get in early. Don't want to travel that far & have crap seats.

Also, for those who are out there for a good time, also a chance you could time it well to catch some of the Ashes.

I see the last spot in the draw will be decided in a playoff between Italy and Russia.
I expect Italy will win, and that could give the cup and unexpected big crowd, because the last game for the qualifier is V Fiji in Canberra.
That should mean Canberra's favourite son, Terry Campese, gets to play his last ever game of RL as captain of Italy on his home pitch.
That should sell out the ground.

Ireland, Wales qualify for Rugby League World Cup 2017

Sun 30 Oct, 2016, 8:04am
Media Release, RLWC 2017

Ireland and Wales will contest the Rugby League World Cup 2017 (RLWC2017) after both countries topped their respective Rugby League European Federation (RLEF) qualifying groups with victories overnight.

As RLEF qualifying Group A winners, Wales, will take position "EQ1" in Pool C of the RLWC2017 tournament draw, with Ireland taking the place of "EQ2" as Group B winners.

RLWC2017 CEO, Andrew Hill, welcomed the addition of both teams to the sport's pinnacle international event which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, with three pool games in Papua New Guinea, from 27 October until 2 December 2017.

"I'd like to congratulate both Ireland and Wales on qualifying for next year's Rugby League World Cup.

"With large expat communities in Australia, we know these two teams will receive strong support and win over a legion of new fans during their respective campaigns.

"With less than 12 months to go until the tournament kicks-off on Friday 27 October 2017, we look forward to confirming the 14th and final team after the final qualifying match between Italy and Russia to be played on Friday 4 November.

"The organising committee is preparing to welcome all competing countries and their supporters to what will be the greatest Rugby League World Cup."

The 2017 tournament will be the first time the Welsh Dragons have featured in a Rugby League World Cup played in the Southern Hemisphere since 1975, and the fourth consecutive appearance for Irish Wolfhounds.

Fitting end to Terry's career after heroically trying to keep a poor team from being relegated from the Super League elite.

Sorry if this sounds dismissive - as you have been much more clued up on the tournament than I so far - but are you sure on those Melbourne prices? They look like concession prices to me. Cheapest I found was $80 or so.

Italy putting the cleaners through Russia is a good result for the cup.
I see they are playing their games in North Queensland and Canberra, both areas with large Italian ex-pat populations, so that works better than Russia, who have very few ex-pats in Aus.
