Quote: SmokeyTA "there are clear failings with the super group plan, there are some positives, and it does fit us in some ways, but it is certainly 'dressing for the job we have' and not 'dressing for the job we want'

i also dont think that it gives the smaller sides enough games, especially when most of them play so few internationals in total, and its even more of an issue when its even rarer for those squads to get all their eligible players playing.'"

Good points.
Maybe have fewer but larger groups? 2 groups of 8? Then every nation plays at least 7 games? That may be too many to fit in though.

Difficult one isn't it. 7 games would be too many and that'd leave us with a long World Cup and an extra 9/10 games for our top players.

Seeded groups works well for other sports, I think that's the way they have to go. Sure, there'll be some blowout scorelines, but ultimately we want a credible & structured International game, and I don't think 'Super Groups' like we saw in 2013 are the way to go.

Doesn't matter if there's 4 or 40 teams in it it will still consist of a semi final line up of Australia, New Zealand, England and one other

I Would go with 15 teams, 3 pools of 5 so all teams get at least 4 games.top 3 to semis, best placed 2nd team to also qualify.

Probably yeah, and with attitudes like that towards the International game, it always will be. Luckily there are a few within the game who have the foresight that our sports needs a more competitive International game and are working towards that 9this being a step in the right direction).

Same structure, but top two in each group plus two best third-placed sides to the quarter finals. England, Australia and New Zealand to be the seeded team in each pool, random draw below that. Quarter-finalists also pre-qualify for the next World Cup, to give them some certainty in terms of development and looking ahead.

Having two third-placed sides qualify would mean that even those sides losing their first two games would have something to play for other than pride in the last two.

WEST COAST PIRATES NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg

Id go with seedings and draw 4 groups split into two sides so 3+1 rounds allowing some blockbusters in the pools, top 2 from each pool go into semis

Say
Group A
England
Samoa
Ireland
PNG

Group B
Australia
Tonga
France
Wales

England play:
3 group teams ie Samoa, Ireland & PNG and top seed from Group B ie Australia.

So if I change my attitude all the other teams will improve let's face it there is only games against Australia and New Zealand worth watching all the other countries are a bit of joke not even competitive stuffed full of Aussies apart from PNG and France but unfortunately those two have gone backwards in recent years

I don't think that anyone can argue with that but, how would you improve the situation for the future or, do we just shrug our shoulders and say that it will never change ?

So many fans are against expansion and unless the game works damn hard to spread its appeal the sport will continue to go backwards.

We should be doing more to grow the game in France to try and make them a decent 4th nation and also try and find a way of helping Wales become stronger. After that, in the northern hemisphere, there is next to nothing but, France and Wales would be a start.

This is something that the "failed" franchise system should have been working towards but, the self interest of the bigger clubs, coupled with the lack of vision and drive from the governing body, put paid to any worthwhile progress and the new format utterly ruins the chance of an additional French club making it into SL.

I think 2013 was pretty much spot on and is what we should stick to. Keep all the groups competitive and every team has something to play for.

3 teams qualify
Australia
England
Fiji
Samoa

3 teams to qualify
New Zealand
France
Tonga
Papua New Guinea

1 team to qualify
Wales
USA
Ireland
Another

1 team to qualify
Scotland
Italy
Cook Islands
Another

I'd love to have a strong international game I just don't see it happening I cant understand why France and PNG have gone backwards and it hinders rather than helps stuffing other countries full of Aussies and the problem with the South sea islanders is that any star players go play for New Zealand or Australia then return at the end of there careers

France and PNG have been left behind because of professionalism really kicking in in SL and the NRL. They can't compete with the pro nations of GB/England, Australia and NZ because there are relatively few PNG and French players in SL and the NRL.
As you rightly say the other nations are then packed with second tier Aussies or Englishmen who, despite being 2nd tier, are still regular pro's and so a step above the players that PNG, France or Wales can produce.
However, they also don't help themselves with regular in-fighting at the top of the French and PNG RL.

But the way to strengthen them isn't to condemn the international game to only being 3 teams. It's to strengthen the international game as a whole.

We need much more money flowing from the 2 pro leagues into the international systems, and to significantly strengthen and expand those systems. IIRC the RLEF (European Federation) runs on something like £2-300k a year. That's not really doing anything except the most basic of basic functions (and that's not meant as a criticism of the RLEF) to grow the game in Europe.
We need a properly funded RLEF and a properly funded RLIF, both of which with teeth to organise and oversee international competitions. In Europe we should be concentrating efforts on getting more French and Welsh players into the Championship and SL and ensuring the French and Welsh RL's are properly structured. For instance ensuring Catalans shift from obstructing to actively assisting the French national team.
In Australia they could get a PNG team into the NRL. Fiji seem to have been making strides in recent years, as have Samoa. They should be looking to setup an annual, or at least biennial, Pacific 4 or 5 Nations including Aus & NZ.

Only through actively strengthening the international game and it's structures will it improve significantly.
And whilst we can appeal more to London and other areas in Britain with the domestic game, you're still not going to get many southerners interested in Wakefield v Widnes. In the same way as I couldn't give a toss about Bath v Saracens. It's not relevant to me.
England gets people interested down south, in the same way as they turn up at Twickers but don't for the Union domestic regular games.
We got more (and better) newspaper and media coverage for the 44k at the Olympic Stadium watching England than we did for either the 80k watching the Challenge Cup Final or the 76k watching the Grand Final.

As a sport we HAVE to prioritise the international game. If we don't we won't ever break out of the heartlands and bar a small handful of 4 or 5 clubs, will be forever struggling to keep our heads above water in terms of finances. Sadly the sport bankrupted itself 20-30 years ago after significant periods of chronic under-investment in every aspect of the sport except players wages, we are still dealing with the effects of that terrible period in our sports history.

I imagine Samoa and Tonga would give your team (and most SL sides) quite a game.
