I did a mountain first aid course some years ago (over 20 methinks) that was ran by a doctor from Bangor hospital: he had a series of very gruesome slides of accidents he had recorded in A&E. Some burns and wounds still remain in my memory.
Stripping your flesh from a finger by climbing with a ring and trapping the ring finger in a "hold" was covered and pictures show: the medical result is amputation. It stopped all of us from wearing rings while scrambling or climbing in case we slipped and the trapped finger was so damaged.
I'm too old for those activities now.

Terry Matterson lost a finger because of a similar accident iirc.

Wasn't he jumping over a fence at training?

I think that was what got report, to retrieve a ball i think, ring go caught and pulled his finger off, i think it said he didnt realise until the team pointed it out.
