If he had been pushed after scoring the try the restart would have been a penalty on the halfway line. The "8 point try", i.e. a penalty in front of the posts in addition to the normal conversion attempt, is only awarded if the offence is committed in the act of scoring a try. This is why they are so rare.

I had heard that it must be in the act of scoring as well. I think I rememeber somebody writing that in a RL publication following that Saints-Wakefield match saying technically it should not have been an 8-point try.

That's what I thought. Once the act of scoring is complete, a penalty can't be awarded; the only action that can be taken then is a ticking off or the showing of a card.

Always the best time to 2@ somebody, the ball's dead, the only restart is a kick off.

I always thought the "8pt try" was if someone had commited foul play either while atry was being scored or just after it? If I am wrong please explain it to me (I've only been watching 22 years and playing 14 years, you'd think i'd know the rules)
