| Quote: vastman "True - there is NO market for RL in America, never has been, never will be - in the meantime people waste time supporting schemes that would make Charles Ponzi blush. RL continues to die a slow death in its UK heartland at both pro and amateur level whilst the air heads on here, in the media and in the games hierarchy vainly search for that magic bullet expansion club that will put it all right. Truly depressing.'"
Just because expansion has failed lots does not mean we should just stop, there have been success, Gateshead was going well until the RFL pulled the rug to save a bankrupt Hull, Catalans are a success somewhat, another french side is long overdue in Super league. personally i would rather see 9 failures and 1 success that not trying at all.
The other problems in the game all need addressing, the amateur game is nothing like it used to be, but you cannot just focus on one element and say that's the problem, that's the solution, all need addressing and expansion forms part of the strategic planning for the future of the game.

Americans love sport and with so many big cities to choose from and even minor cities, there is every chance we can get a foothold and even a small share of the market can produce crowds that dwarf most lower /upper championship clubs. Its not the holy grail, but its an opportunity we must expand on, if it goes tits up just like all the other explanation plans then we still must not give up. just how many rockets crashed in the 50-60s before they got it right. how many airplanes crashed when they were developing, how many trains and steam engines conked out. its Human Nature to strive for bigger and better.
Fact is there are some millionaires over there with cash to spend and want to spend it on RL, and too many fans over here are seeing that as a bad thing, it it was Union they wanted to spend it on, they would have snapped their hands of by now.'"
If it was RFL they wanted, they would have snapped our hand off. America is a stupid market to even try, may as well give North Korea a go.

Yes, sure. America is a stupid market to even try. North Korea is so comparable to America as an open and huge sports market where we really want the game to grow.
Toronto was a stupid market to even try. Toronto only average 7,000 fans at home games in the Championship. Remind me which other Championship clubs average 7,000 home fans.
You are so perceptive. We need to persist with models like Salford and Wakefield which are such great financial and fan base successes.

However, this being the case, why, oh why, didn't we expand SL to 14 clubs (to include Toronto and Toulouse) at the last, very recent, restructure.
N. America is STILL an experiment and it needs to be tested at the top level.
On the (huge) minus side. Even with Toulouse and Toronto in SL, would this actually increase the TV deal ? and if so, can you explain just how, because, a few hundred extra Canadian / French subscribers wont make a TV deal happen.
Btw, I'm loving the threats from the RL fans of Leeds that they would cancel their Sky subscriptions if Leeds get relegated
The TV deal would be an investment that could benefit the broadcaster hugely, it would be no greater than the £/viewer our primary competitor gets currently and create at least 2 extra games per week. Ideally France would provide Cats, TO and Avignon/3rd to the structure,60/70 FT French players would be a great start to recreating a Northern Hemisphere intl comp. The buying power of our N.American cousins should see them competitive Y1 because they will bring in a team, wasting time in lower divisions is silly at best - bonds must be provided by all clubs though. As PT teams find investment and a fan base they should be welcomed into a growing structure, with bonds, if they wish to apply.

People always bring up Catalan but its a total falsehood as there is simply no comparison between Southern France and the USA. The game in France is well established having been played there for 90 years. There was an existing league with numerous clubs and a basic youth system. Thus there was a relatively small but useful fan base. It was all there just waiting to happen yet in its infinite stupidity RL gave the first French franchise to Paris and not to anybodies surprise it failed miserably.
Yet compared to the USA it still made more sense - at least it was close to the UK and relatively easy to get to and at least it was in a RL playing nation all be it the wrong part.
The USA has none of he above yet somehow some people convince themselves it can work there when it failed in Paris. Even when the Denver test sent out s resounding message that nobody was bothered we still pretend. I can't work out if it's vanity, stupidity, naivety or a death wish for the game but its costing us.

Perhaps you'd like to give us an insight into the financial structures and the inner workings at Wakefield which you claim to know so much about.

Wakefield have an excellent business model and one which is totally sustainable. They only spend what they earn.
Do you value "bigger" clubs, who's business model depends on a sugar daddy, more?

Wakefield has few fans and a terrible dump of a 1950s stadium which is a disgrace to the game. The Wakefield business model involves insulting and discomforting away fans who make the mistake of visiting the ground.
I value the bigger clubs like Wigan, St Helens, Warrington, Leeds, Hull FC, Hull KR, Huddersfield and Catalans who offer away fans a wonderful, comfortable, game day experience.

| No it doesn't.
For a start, they have only just acquired ownership - before that, they would have been spending their money doing up someone else's property.
Secondly, any business model based on spending more than you have, equals disaster. Ask Bulls. Ask Widnes.

Fair do's, I forgot you are French and following a conversation in a second language can be so hard. My bad.
I was responding to your assertion that Wakefield's business model "involves insulting and discomforting away fans who make the mistake of visiting the ground".

| And yes, by the way, our stadium is pants.
The club are doing everything they can to rectify that - they just won't spend money they don't have. That's sensible.
