I haven't seen the game yet but from what I am hearing this is all very symbolic of the wider problems within Super League, that being that there are too many clubs/teams/players that are just not up to scratch, combined with very little to play for for most teams. Realistically even the mid table teams know that they're only going to make it in to the play-offs to act as warm-ups for the top teams in the first round, before Leeds and Warrington get down the business of deciding who will play Wigan in the final. To sit there aiming digs specifically at Salford and Castleford is to miss the point entirely.

Rugby League fans have an unhealthy obsession with attendances. To some, it's like a religion and just like religion, full of vicious preacher's, hate, and pointlessness.

What's the point in dribbling on about it all the time?

It just seems a little odd to read a games attendance on a website and feel such indignation and offense that you take your pent-up sexual anger and vent it with like-minded individuals. There's plenty of issues that are worth getting angry about in our game and for me crowd figures are fairly low down on the list.

It's just a little bit weird, especially seeing as it's constantly spewd-out practically every week with the same conclusions and the same strokers harping-on about it.

Quote: SaintsFan "To someone who hasn't seen the game before, the Salford match would have been a great one to have as an introduction because it had all the qualities of a highly entertaining game
If only that were true, we'd have huge crowds and no problems, but you use the word 'imagine' and I'm sorry to say imagination is exactly what it is. We're deluded in this sport about what we think attracts new fans - that's obvious from our abject failure to do outside the M62.

Interested to hear what issues are more important than attendances. Not saying there aren't any, but what are the ones that push attendances so low down the list?

Quote: The Devil's Advocate "
I appreciate it was the bottom two teams, but for people to say “what do you expect” well, I expect just a tad more effort, but to be fair to the players – what’s the point?

For a start, the domestic season is over for both of them & it’s only April!

One team is going to be dissected in the next few months, no matter how much effort they put in & the other lot doesn’t know how the future will pan out, only their “go to” man is being jettisoned to reduce the wages bill.

However, the greatest irony is – No worries lads, at least you won’t suffer the ignominy of relegation, a spur if ever there was one to give that extra five percent. '"

For both set of players they're reasons to put in effort and the answer is in part of what you wrote.

For Salford players, they will be concerned that they won't be there next year once signings start to be made......so they should be effectively putting themselves in the shop window so to speak. Likewise for Castleford, they'll have a new coach soon and don't know if they'll fit into his plans.....also just sporting pride of not wanting to lose a game, not wanting to finish bottom.....that might not bother you if you were in the same position but that says more about you.

As for criticising effort....well that's much more harder to judge than questioning the skill level.....probably why the doom mongers like to point to it so much. The saddest part is a few people will have decided BEFORE the game that their wasn't going to be enough effort. Any knock-on, any try conceded predetermined to be because of 'lack of effort'.

And as for 'the extra spur of relegation' I again point to the Reading vs QPR played today. Reading with a record of 2pts from 33 possible in the run in.......hardly 'spurred on' and not just them but sport is filled with teams that went down with a wimper. Also how can the NRL be consistently praise for intensity even though they don't have relegation......yet its another nail in the coffin over here in SL?

Oh, I’m sure their putting themselves in the shop window, however, it’ll be an Aldi rather than a Sainsbury’s.

I love your analysis of my psyche, however, after playing & watching teams battling to avoid the drop, my experiences are all too real, as opposed to whether I’ll see my team win the GF or CC, or even both – like yourself.

If you believe that both sets of players gave their all, well that’s your opinion.

Your Premier League analogy is hardly a fair comparison, I wonder if the League 2 clubs went down with such a whimper?

With regard to the NRL, the intensity of which you speak is still high at this time of the season, but come the back end it’s not all that from the teams out of the equation.

So say the "many" fans of Salford & London.

The RFL, via their minimum requirements for membership of SL and the Financial Directors of those clubs, who have to pay the bills of those clubs, may beg to differ.

Just ask Mr Hudgell.

PS - Well done Fev & Fax.

Attendances for games set to kick off at unusual times to cater for television audiences do seem to be an obsession of yours.rlExamplerl
Why a Wakefield follower should show such interest in the home attendances at the 2 lowest clubs in Super league, and also mention London, may indicate some worry for the future for Wakefield in Super League.
Attendances throughout the sport should be a concern as should the impecuniosity of a number of clubs.
It does rile me that there are so many comments and derision without any ideas offered on how to improve things.
Featherstone have been developing on and off the field since 2008,when Daryl Powell became head coach, and to have a high attendance with a 3pm k.o on a Sunday will surprise no one.
You needn't concern yourself with the people paying the bills at Salford.I believe the RFL will be very pleased. icon_smile.gif
It may ameliorate your heartfelt heartache over the attendance at Salford if I inform you that the occasion was deemed as 'Ladies Day' and so all of those people who took advantage of that may not have been added to the final figure.
Now,how about informing the Financial Directors, who are very busy at Salford reviving what only a few months ago was a corpse, how to attract spectators to the stadia ?

So Salford have declared a lower number than actually attended?? Give your head a shake.

There was not as many there as claimed.

The whole game needs sustainable clubs at every level. Salford, currently, are not sustainable.

The promised land of Manchester and the Media City, with the BBC tossing themselves off over the Reds is a myth of Biblical proportions.

Salford will be nothing more than a bloody good pay day for players looking for that final pension top up.

What a bitter man you are. Unfortunately I cannot add the word knowledgeable too.

There were 2.306 paying spectators last night. Additionally a few season ticket holders - for the reasons mentioned on this thread. Also the Dining Suite attendees were not added. Many of whom stayed indoors watching the game on the screens. My estimate for the total crowd there last night would be over 3,500 but dont let that figure upset your constant sniping. As a Wakey fan you must be very envious that Dr Marwan will ensure that the Reds will be very successful.

It is the case in any popular sport league here, exactly the same in soccers lower league, RU's prem, that the vast majority of the crowds week in week out are people that committed with a season ticket at the start of the season.

Judge Salford next year.

Are salfords season ticket prices cheaper than the walk up prices?
