That is fair comment. Tries alone do not prove who is better. Performances say a lot more. Schofield was head and shoulders a more influential and better player than Edwards at the highest levels of the game, whether that be in the international arena or in the Australian competition. Schofield proved his world class credentials at those levels, Edwards never did.

Cunningham and Newton have a lot in common. Both were excellent hookers but neither were world class because neither proved it at the highest levels of the game. Cunningham was the better and more influential player domestically, but Newton was the better player internationally. I put that difference down to lack of motivation - Cunningham just never appeared interested in playing international fixtures. He'd regularly withdraw from international selection with trivial injuries. Newton by contrast was motivated and raised his game at that level.

You are correct - we never won a game against Australia when Cunningham played. His international record against New Zealand isn't much better either, on the losing side 8 times before finally breaking his duck with a couple of wins - one which was a mid-season joke fixture at Knowsley Road against a weak team comprised mainly of Kiwi exiles playing in Super League.

Or perhaps he just wasn't a good enough player in a higher level competition like the ARL? Playing for a dominant team like Wigan in a one-team competition is a world away from playing down under in more ways than one.

Correct, but it still doesn't make him a better player than Schofield who was far more talented and influential at international level and in Australia.

Winning a bucketload of trophies for Wigan doesn't make Edwards a better plater than Schofield. You were happy to discount the number of tries scored at international level alone as being a ridiculous way of comparatively proving anything, but counting domestic trophies collected at Wigan is just as ridiculous.
