When you play in the same team as Benji Marshall and win the club’s player of the year award 3 years straight, I would suggest that you are more than merely solid

| Quote: r a n c i d "I don't understand where this "Australians can't accept English players are good" line of thinking comes from, if anything it's the exact opposite. English players in Australia are given added spotlight and championed, because the NRL sees having a competition of multi-ethnic, multi-nationality players as a great thing.
Exactly. And if you watch the Channel Nein commentary in particular they fawn all over the poms - especially Burgess. But they tend to do that with all the players that they have on the Footy Show etc. But what you have to remember is that poms have the world's biggest chip on their shoulder and it is actually they who can't admit that Australians aren't as obsessed about whether poms are good or not as poms are about it. The NRL is a meritocracy and it doesn't matter where you come from, which club you play for etc. But it suits the chip mentality to think that Aussies go out of their way to run down pommy players here, which is complete nonsense. If anything the opposite is true.

| On the contrary, I think the fawning is a direct result of having your prejudices smashed to smithereens, pleasant surprises always have a greater impact than confirmation of hope.
It's a bit like going to your local chippy that looks like it's not been cleaned for a few years and routinely leave the fat in the fryer for too long before changing it making the chips a bit rubbery sometimes... only to find out that they serve excellent Gravy ... "OMG this is the most amazing Gravy I've ever had in my life! Taste this, grab a fork and taste it, seriously! it's wonderful!"

| One paper I read from over there was saying that the top 6 or so clubs from SL would compete in the NRL no probs and that Graham had nothing to prove in any case.

| Thats it.
England has better Forwards than the ones in the NRL, the tide is turning, with Ryan Hall and Sam Tomkins its only a matter of time before Australia fears England and what they could do to the Kangaroo side.

simpsons/simp048.gif I have only been wrong once and thats because I thought I was wrong but I was wrong I was right!
Petty authoritarians aren’t man enough to challenge the actions of a person face to face; instead they incite a forum of rumour, innuendo and half truths, and impose rude sanctions to discourage those who dare question fairness.

I'm glad you've finally admitted it.

I've spent time in Australia and that's possibly the most ironic thing I've ever heard (coming from and australian)

Don't forget the greatest skipper of all time (Sir Kev) ripping it up at international level against Australia by leading England from the front, from the back and from halfback.

| I thought Graham looked pretty average today. Kas was a beast for us though but it just shows you stats mean jack because Graham's are more impressive.

Tolman's stats were the most impressive among the Canterbury forwards.
I'll be keeping an eye out on Ellis and Heighington's comparative stats for the Tigers. In past seasons they bear a remarkable resemblance, yet Ellis is perceived as ripping up the NRL big-style week in week out and Heighington is crap according to the very same perceptions

I have to say that whenever I've watched Wests Tigers games Ellis has never especially stood out for me so I'm continually surprised that he's won the club player of the year award each year he's been there. Then again I've not watched many Tigers games in previous seasons. Plan to see as many as are on Premier Sports this season so should have a better idea.
Burgess on the other hand looked the standout forward if not player on the field in the bunnies opening game of the season so can't understand the criticism of him by the likes of Rancid as disappointing...
